They got in very early. When I went through the turnstiles at the Grange End the police ushered us under the stand and onto the bob bank where, as you say, a big line of police kept everyone apart. I think it must have been earlier than the late seventies because if i remember the fence was put up in 1974 before the Man Utd game and i cant remember there being a fence for the Pompey game

Andrew, you are spot on; the Bluebirds fence went up in 1976 and remained until early 2006 when we played Burnley. The fences remained for 26 years and ours were actually the very last of the 92 EFL clubs to have their fences removed
