A TOUGH GAME: Mamelodi (Rsa) South Africa V Cardiff City

Mon Jul 22, 2024 9:01 am

This was Cardiff’s 5th First Team Friendly

And probably the toughest as the South Africans came at Cardiff and opened us up on a number of times and were very solid when we attacked them.

A good tough game and good for the City players.

Malachi Fagan-Walcott looked good

Conte looked good again.

Mamelodi (Rsa) South Africa 1 Cardiff City 1
H-T 0-0

Crowd 100 approx

Including 45-60 Cardiff fans

A high-tempo first-half ends goalless in Wörgl.

47th min: City took the lead! (0-1)

The perfect start to the second half, as Joel Colwill applies a brilliant finish!

75th min: Tashreeq Matthews equalised for Mamelodi Sundowns 1-1
GOAL! Cardiff City 1-1 Mamelodi Sundowns (Matthews)

Sundowns raced away on the counter, and Matthews found space in behind Collins before cutting inside to fire across Horvath and into the net.

They are all virtually regular first team players Wez

In friendlies you have to rotate and watch more to see if they are the ones for the new season that will stand out

Wez,

That’s why we took 28 players.

Bulut was not going to start them all again it was only Sunday we played.

Looks like he’s giving a few others a chance today.

Still no game time for Willock and Chambers, but Bulut did say he would give them time before playing pre season games - often happens with new signings.

By the end of this trip, Bulut will know which players he wants to keep and which he wants to let go.

This is exactly what we should be doing in pre-season friendlies, rotate all the players, give them all a chance and then assess what comes out of it.

Quite frankly the results are irrelevant, but individual and team performances are. :bluebird:

Will Alnwick win back his position as the number one keeper?

I don't think so but he's getting a chance to show what he can do.

I thought it was just me. I seem ok now.

As to Mamelodi Sundowns they are not a bad side. This is their 3rd or 4th friendly so they are a few games ahead of us re fitness and also, in their last match, they narrowly lost 1-0 to Dynamo Kiev.

This is great for the younger and inexperienced players to show what they can do.

Looking forward to seeing more of the young players on the bench. If any of them can break through and provide more depth, I’ll be happy.

Mamelodi Sundowns with a dangerous attack, but Jak Alnwick claims the ball well.

Decent pace to the game for a friendly, quite even.

Sundowns have some decent players.

Turnbull did well, good at turning defence into attack.

I know it is a difficult comparison but Mamelodi are ranked 102 in the World Clubs Ranking.

We are 388.
