The Welsh League to Me is a pure joke

TNS outclassed by Ferencvaros ( Hungary )in Champions League

The New Saints boss Craig Harrison in the dugout

23 July 2024

The New Saints were outclassed by Ferencvaros as they were beaten 5-0 in the Champions League second qualifying round first leg.

Mali winger Adama Traore scored a hat-trick, with Kristoffer Zachariassen and Marquinhos also finding the target in Budapest as Ferencvaros cruised to a comprehensive victory.
Saints, Welsh champions in the last three seasons, began as underdogs against opponents who have won the last six Hungarian titles and included a number of international players.
Barring a miracle comeback in the home second leg on Tuesday, 30 July, Saints will now drop into the Europa League third qualifying round, where they will meet either Cypriot side APOEL or Moldova’s FC Petrocub.
Craig Harrison’s team were on the backfoot from the outset against Ferencvaros, with Traore breaking the deadlock on 14 minutes with a header which looped inside the far post.
Traore swept in his second goal seven minutes later after the visitors’ defence failed to deal with a ball over the top from Raul Gustavo.
It was 3-0 on 24 minutes, Norway midfielder Zachariassen guiding the ball low into the bottom corner from Marquinhos’ cross.

And this is the best that Dog & Duck Welsh Premier League can offer?

It's not right the likes of Cardiff, Swansea, Wrexham and Newport can't qualify to represent their country in Europe.

Little wonder the best league in Wales is considered a total joke through European football eyes.

Cardiff must stop sending out players to these type of leagues on loan, No wonder the players never improve and never make it.

What I find hilarious are the x profiles demanding the likes us, Swansea Newport Wrexham and Merthyr join the Welsh league.

Utterly insane. I’ve never agreed with so many jacks before.

In all for helping develop Welsh talent. But we won’t be doing that in the Welsh league. We do that by playing at the highest level consistently and regularly.
Sure a European qualification may be nice. But one swallow doesn’t make a summer.

An argument could be made for Merthyr but they clearly are happy where they are or they would have joined them by now.

The Welsh FA should be partnering with our clubs to give Welsh talent the best platforms for development and exposure. But taking us out of the leagues we have always been in will make Welsh football slip right to the doldrums and won’t improve the league in the slightest.
We fight against the likes of Man U. City. Liverpool etc for fans as it is and we are only one league down from them.
We have no chance if the highlight is a trip to see Blake lively and Ryan Reynolds.

I’m also concerned that our women are stuck in the league. All while Newport effectively co-opt Cardiff city ladies who play against some well established clubs.

Our women are semi pro which is great. But where can they go? What sort of platform do they have?
What is the politics that stops them playing in the English pyramid like our mens and development sides?

The attendances are pathetic. People have no interest in paying to see a shocking standard of soccer on little better than Parks pitches.

Semi pro/amateur Welsh rugby get better attendances than the Welsh football league manages and that’s on its arse. They at least usually have a community link and junior sections which help prop the clubs up.

Wales can’t support an elite competition in sport. Especially when England is quite literally Nextdoor.
Fans want to watch the highest level of competition as shown when we were in the premier league.

Why don’t Cardiff,Swansea Newport and Wrexham put B teams in the Welsh leagues similar to what the big clubs to in Spain

Pure ignorance of people who have never played at that level .

Because the Spanish clubs put their B teams in the same association league system.

We are in the English pyramid system

The only way the Welsh League could be dragged up to a level just below the Scottish clubs is if Cardiff, Swansea, Wrexham, Newport and Merthyr join the Welsh League.

It will never happen as they are businesses.

However if it did there would need to be significant investment with no return for a good few years.

If the crowds stayed for the 'big' clubs then it may drag the others up.
