It’s pretty wild that only Burnley and Leeds have spent more

It’s pretty wild that only Burnley and Leeds have spent more than Birmingham thus far this season. Is £12m or so an unprecedented amount for a team in League One? It’s a pretty reckless, potentially ruinous approach for a team that we’re surely pretty strong to begin with?

It is reckless, no doubt about that.

They’ll say that if they do what Sunderland and Ipswich did, by having a double promotion and getting back to the PL then it would have been worth it.

But if it goes wrong then they could be in real trouble and at best be stuck in the lower leagues for a long time.

I remember all of Bolton, Portsmouth, Sheffield Wednesday etc saying they would bounce straight back from League One. Some of them did eventually, but it took a while.

Bolton and Portsmouth have even been down to League Two.

I think they will comfortably come back up this season coming.

It all hinges on the season after. If they go all out again and manage to avoid FFP trouble and get promotion again then they are laughing.

I don't see that happening though.

This is a club that as sacked two decent managers for star names and came a cropper! Potential for doing same with spending.
