“ Proven Championship Striker “

Mon Jul 29, 2024 4:58 pm

I am sick to death of hearing those three words.

What do people class as a proven Championship striker and how much do they honestly think that’s going to cost?

How many goals do they need to have scored in the Championship?

Why would they join us and not a relegated team who can offer them more money?

If a striker score 15-20 goals in the Championship, he’ll go to the PL or abroad - Moore and Gyokeres are examples of this.

If they score 10 goals they’d still cost at least £2m. But people would say they haven’t scored enough.

One player who could be considered as someone who scored goals at this level is Kaba and people on here said they didn’t want him.

So the better option is to look abroad. Some won’t work out but sometimes you can find a gem.

When we get linked with strikers, there’s always a reason why they’re supposedly not what we need - too old, too young, not experienced enough, not used to the league etc.

I don’t know much about Kanga, none of us do. But he does seem to have the attributes to succeed in the Championship.

I’m cautiously optimistic about this signing.

I just hope the fans support him and stop demanding a “proven Championship striker” - which I’m not sure really exists.

You are not alone.

Also to add to your point of this magical proven striker. The two times we had promotion up to the PL I don’t recall having a striker either season scoring more than 10. So it’s a nonsensical want/need that supporters desire.

A proven championship striker if exists doesn't do sfa if the team is crap... smodic 30goals where did Blackburn come last Season?
And he won't be there this season nor in championship...

I couldn't agree more.

Teemu Pukki springs to mind. Never played in the championship, ripped it apart first season.

Same here! Really bugs me hearing those words.

Like you also said, can’t seem to please anyone on here!

Nobody really signs “proven”, teams buy players with attributes and make it work, who then become this magical “proven” striker.

I agree with the OP. Those 3 words are like a curse.

However, a 20 /25 goal a season striker like some of the names mentioned would not have got that return playing in our side last season. A full back was our top scorer with 6! Haaland would have struggled to hit 20, that’s why the tactic, intent, style and formation has to change to benefit the striker.

I do agree with that. Tactics need to be more attacking, especially at home.
