Always know it as Chip Alley not chippy, because of all the chips and grease on the floor

Chippy lane I’ve always known it as. I’m 41 from Cardiff. I know it’s officially Caroline st. Only ever heard it called chippy alley by echo

It was always known as Caroline street when I was younger. It's only in the last 15 years or so that I've heard it called chippy lane.

Agree; although I think it was longer than 15 years. Back in the day, it wasn’t just famous for its chip shops (IYKYK)

Definitely Caroline Street and later Chippy Lane, but never Chippy Alley. Age 61 from Cardiff and had many a late night "treat" from Dorothy's

I always remember it as Caroline Street from my clubbing days through the 80s & very early 90s, then I got married so that all stopped.

Everyone I know calls it chippy lane
Obviously some parts of Cardiff have stuck with Caroline st
But it’s gotta be chippy lane literally

It's Caroline Street and it always has been. Never chippy alley/lane etc. It's like calling Queen St 'Shoppy Street'.

Affirmative. There shouldn't even be an argument about this.
I'm in my 50s and have always known it as Caroline Street. It may be a generational thing because it does seem that most born post 1980 see it as Chippy Lane.
I also think the local media / tourists are responsible for re-badging it Chippy Alley/ Lane - its a bit of a throwaway, lazy tag, however accurate the description might be. Theres probably 1000s of Chip Alleys around the UK!

Born and bred Ely boy 63 yrs old has always been Caroline street to me never heard of chippy lane/ alley lol
