We were quicker in tempo first 15 minutes that's it. Soon as Sunderland scored, we probably knew it was game over at home
yet again. Their game plan was spot on with the counter.
If you're looking for more goalmouth action, Sheff Weds had 30 shots against a poor Plymouth side yesterday. Their midlield like
others, constantly looking to play forward, every opportunity. I was hoping our manager would come out all guns blazing, against a young Sunderland side. They've not won away since the opening day 2010. Sadly we were treated, yet again to two defensive midfielders, slow build up play and inverted wingers.
It's one game, long way to go, more to hopefully come in...BUT. Let's hope the manager shows a different side to his tactics, for his and our sake. Goals win games, not stats and possession. Let's get the ball forward at pace, get behind, turn defenders, fizz balls into the box, and test the keeper.... from all over the pitch. We need midfield to chip in as well as our attack.
Keep it front foot, tempo, tempo is everything.....It's a simple game really.

Agree too easy to play keep ball at back away teams don't care. But surely we should be looking to get it forward at pace our slow attacks just let's defence to get back in numbers and we can't break them down and find the gaps so ball just gets recycled back to defence and eventually to keeper and de ja vu

I do think we were more attacking.
Ralls definitely playing further forward (whether he was effective is another matter) and Willock was always at the edge of the box (last season Grant was very deep at times).
Obviously the name of the game is scoring goals, which we didn’t do. Ramsey and Tanner both missed good chances.
Ramsey overall was poor and needs to step it up.
But I’m not going to judge on just one game, for good or for bad.
I’ll be going to Burnley and let’s see how we set up there.

Great post
I was asked on here at the end of last season who I'd pick to replace Bulut, and Danny Rohl was one of my choices. As you can imagine I was shot down by the usual Bulut lovers.
For the last few weeks I've been optimistic that Bulut can change his tactics, after Saturday I'm not sure he's capable. Our next 6 games are tough, it needs to change and quickly, if not, he could be gone!

I thought we were more attacking compared to last season. Unfortunately as you say its about scoring goals, not just the football played.
I do question at times if it's actually Bulut, or a mix of Bulut AND the players.
We started well but certain players were very slow to move the ball and went backwards or sideways.
Ramsey well off the ball, not sure if it was just one off game or if he's losing more than just a couple of inches of space these days.
Sunderland have a lot of energy, a good young team. I've said it before and I'll say it again, it doesn't really matter how young players are. If they are good enough, they are good enough.
I'd like to see King get some gametime, I feel like he's earned it.

My observation is we seem more concerned about maintaining possession than gambling to make something happen. It looks over-drilled and is not effective at the moment. Sunderland looked sketchy to the low ball into the box; which gave Robinson a 6 yard sitter which he didn't connect with... but then went higher into the box where Robbo was just out numbered and out manned.
Rubin breaks the mould with regards to the patterns of play, but same lack of effect on the opposition goal.
We're easy to defend against.

Also, if it isn't happening... you may have to switch to Warnock-ball or at least something a bit less pretty.
12 shots. 4 on target. 22 touches in opposition box. Yes, we need to be more attacking.

How many tumes did tanner stop and play it backwards midfield had no penatration into sundetlands half they had all 11 in there own half and we just kept going bsck and for across the pitch with passes
to you to me back to you and back again oasdung it to death
i want a midfielder like steven gerrard who will run with the ball and attack there defence and break the lines
everyone around me where all saying the same we are trying to play like arsenal passing to death ffs run with the ball make something happen
Tanner should not get a game for the rest of the season
put willock on the right o' dowda up the left bagan left back.

The first fifteen minutes were good, and we could see what we were trying to do, after that we lost our way, but it was only the first game and most of our new players were either not available or just getting used to their new team and tactics.
New teams and tactics take a while to settle, let's support them while that happens and they need us.
Tanner will be dropped for a while and NG won't play as bad as that again this season, on the other side Willock and O'Dowda played well.

Monty there was quite a few opportunities to push forward but for some reason players on the ball decided not to pass or put ball in gap out wide but chose to stop go sideways or back now i don't believe thats a bulut instruction so why do it? As for Tanner ffs at least try and go around defender or try beating him with skill (he's got that) from where I sit can see every move that can develop whether it's ours or opponents and can see on Saturday how Sunderland used the opportunities while we didn't..... despite what people say I believe things have changed from buluts perspective but not the players who are holding on to last seasons tactics.. hopefully when all new players are in team it will change.

Good point on the possession, we are new to it and were concentrating more on that than looking to score the goals, Bulut has plenty of work in the next stage this week, but possession wise, it was a big step forward.

Tanner looked way out of his depth, you could see it in his body language, he was out wide in space and not calling for the ball, he was looking down it didn't look to me like he wanted the ball at all.

The boring negative football was drilled into the players last season. Sideways and backwards. You could see it Saturday, on many occasions player had ball, every chance to drive forward and their first thought is to go backwards. May take a while to get out of this mindset. Meite had a go when he came on to be fair and odowda on times.

Couldn't have put it more articulately myself Wiggster - nail on head so to speak.
Can or will Bulut instruct his players to take the shackles off? We're about to find out either way. I truly hope this season isn't a facsimile of the last one.
Bulut must get the zest and passion and enjoyment of football from his players.

Ok - that'll leave us £9,999,999 short for Shankland or Whittaker then! :-)
