That’s the Rubin Colwill I want to see

Tue Aug 13, 2024 8:56 pm

Regular readers of my posts will know I’m as critical of Rubin Colwill as anyone.

But when he moved into the number ten position tonight, he did everything well - albeit against lower league opposition.

He is not a winger and should never be played as a winger. At number ten, he can be very dangerous when he is on his game.

Deserved his goal tonight and he finished it well.

I hope he can build on that now when he gets his other chances because I really do want him to be successful with us.

Probably MOTM tonight as he played the whole game as well.

What a shock! Playing the lad in his natural position, liberates him, he is able to display his full range of talents and creativity.
More evidence that Bulut, does not trust him, does not understand how to get the best out of a very talented youngster and he is a negative, cautious coach.

He was excellent and deserved a goal in the end but his finishing and end product is still awful. Its so frustrating because if he added this he would be a premier league player. He has to learn to be clinical but also has to be trusted in that number 10 role more often too. Over to you Bulut.

Dare I say it, play Rubin and Rambo together on Saturday in the middle.
Let’s see how much carnage they cause!

Looked good against a tiring league one side who were playing many reserve players and chasing the game as 1 0 down. Tanner also looked good against lesser opposition and that's probably his level.

First half same boring, slow negative football, I enjoyed last 20 minutes when we went at them, could have been 4 or 5 their keeper made some great saves.

Rubin Outstanding

Quality performance tonight but just burst in to the game on the 60 minute mark as soon as he went in to his best position as a 10. If I was Bulut I would be making space for him in the team saturday based on that performance changed the game, he was everywhere and made us tick, worked so hard and deserved his goal at the end. I would play him as the 10 and have rambo at 8 until robertson is up to speed. Robertson completely ineffective and nowhere near as good as rubin tonight at 10 and rambo Saturday looked unfit and nowhere near the energy rubin showed tonight. If Rubin played as the 10 v sunderland on the saturday we would have had enough to beat them in my opinion too.

I agree with this. Rambo and rubin our best options of trying to score from open play at the moment which we struggle too so just go for it and play them in the middle together.
Rubin confidence with finishing could be high after his goal so go for it, if Rubin adds goalscoring to his game and his finishing improves to a good standard he is a premier league player

I thought Rubin was very good, though looked tired at times, as the game went on, he got better and thought he was excellent in the second half, deserved his goal, was a real pain for Rovers, some of his passes were excellent also, match of the match for me, mainly for his second half performance and work rate.

Hopefully we see that more offered, that goal will do him good also!

The problem here is nine times out of ten, the manager plays him wide right or wide left. Never ever
his best position. Let's see what happens on Saturday.

Rubin and Rambo excite me as an attacking force. Rubin had learnt a lot from Rambo - even the blonde hair to identify him quickly on the pitch!

Watch his celebration of his goal, he thought he had missed at first   :ayatollah:

The suggestion that Bulut would even consider such an approach in an away game at Burnley is absolutely pie in the sky.

Doubt he'll start Robertson so it'll probably be Ralls, Ramsey and Siopis starting with the usual approach of trying to keep the game at 0-0 for as long as possible then try to nick a set piece.

If Robinson is out on Saturday Colwill may get a start but it'll probably be out wide where he's usually ineffective.

1st half he was abysmal but 2nd half was great

Bench Rambo for Saturday then.

I agree on first-half

Second-half good but not great v a Bristol Rovers team full of their squad who have never played

Drop one of Ralls/Sio or Ramsey for Colwill. I don't mind either.

Great second half performance.

However, he was absolutely blowing out of his arse after his goal, and then dropped to the floor at 90 mins as if he'd ran through a 120minute war before a penalty shoot out. He hasn't got a large stamina tank at all.

Focussing on the good. Got a goal, nearly had a second and is one of the few who actually want to take the ball on the half-turn and get in between the lines in our whole squad. More positive intentions than wanting to play the safe pass.

What I like about Colwill is that he seems to know where the goal is. Personally, I think we could do a lot worse than try and convert him into a centre forward.

My biggest thrill as a City fan, is our homegrown players coming through and making it. Always has been. I appreciate that often gives me rose tinted glasses when they get criticism, and Rubin has had lots of that over the last few years. An enigma almost, and I have always backed him and often find myself watching him more than the rest of the game. He has and brings something different , particularly in Buluts system which I have consistently criticized. The time for putting to bed the lack of consistency, upping his assists and goals is now.

I would love to see him in either a midfield with Robertson and Rambo, or being closer to our regularly isolated striker, I just don’t think bulutball suits his game or mindset. I think he would thrive in an Ipswich or Leeds. I’m not totally blaming the rigidity of Buluts football, he has to be accountable for the above things that need improving, but I don’t think the system helps.

Very good second half last night against a poor team who we made look good for periods.

I am a Rubin fan. - moreso his brother. Who I hope returns in January.
