“ Will Fish / Defender “

Mon Aug 19, 2024 3:49 pm

Update:

There is currently a deal being worked on to bring Will Fish, the Manchester United centre-back, to Cardiff. That is moving at a pace and it is hoped that will get over the line at some point in the coming days

Manchester United defender Will Fish is joining Cardiff City on a permanent transfer / released by United.

Has made 55 appearances for Hibernian

Aged 21 joined United in 2019 and has made one appearance and since 2021 has been out on loan.

United have allowed Fish to leave on a free transfer.

The Manchester Evening News revealed last month that Fish was attracting interest from Championship clubs and he's set to complete a permanent move to Cardiff this week.

There was interest from various second-tier clubs in signing Fish on loan and on permanent deals, but Cardiff have admired him for some time and have struck a deal with United.

It's understood Fish was desperate to play first-team football at a competitive level after his successful loan spell with Hibernian last term, which saw him make 45 appearances.

Fish was a regular starter in Scotland and wants a prominent squad role at this stage of his career, although the move is bittersweet for the 21-year-old as he's leaving his boyhood club.

United insiders considered Fish's temporary spell with Hibernian as one of the most successful loans they had arranged and he is departing with the best wishes of staff.

The youngster always hoped for a permanent transfer away from United this summer, but he was brought on the pre-season tour of the USA and picked up an injury against Liverpool.

Fish was stretched off in the defeat to Liverpool in South Carolina, but the injury wasn't as bad as initially feared, which has allowed him to recover and agree a move to Cardiff.

United have signed Leny Yoro for €62m plus €8m in add-ons and Matthijs de Ligt for €45m with a potential further €5m this summer and were happy to sell Fish on a permanent transfer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave Fish his United senior debut when he was just 17 years old against Wolves at Molineux Stadium on the final day of the 2020/21 Premier League season.

Fish is a local lad, born in Denton, and has been on United's books since he joined the academy at seven. His contract with United expired in 2025 and the club had the option of another year.

If this has been promised to him then possibly a formations change with 3 at the back....surely not with Bulut

Same here Wez, he has struggled to get a club and is not consistent

The fact that United are letting him go for nothing probably speaks volumes.

Compare that to Robertson, where Man City fought hard for the fee and sell on fee.

Well he did play 45 games for hibs last season if he was that much of a hit or miss i don't believe he would have played that many games!

My nephew who is not just a big Man Utd fan but a huge footy fan in general, so much so his nickname is statto has said that Fish has been on the verge of braking through for a couple of seasons but always ends up on loan as he wanted to play more and develop, said he has a great attitude,he’s physical and good on the ball, reckons he will do well in the championship and if we don't make it to that the premier league a few will be after him in a year or two and we could make good money from him ?

Buster Gonad would be a good fit for us also. Very positive attitude

I really hope these two new defenders are good. I can’t say I know anything about them, but it’s hard to be excited. We got one defender that went on loan to a team that ended up at the bottom half of the Scottish league, and another that plays in the Belgium league. I will support them though once they put on the shirt.

Cardiff City are set to sign Manchester United defender Will Fish on a permanent transfer amid his loan spell at Hibernian being rated as a huge success by the Red Devils, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The 21-year-old spent time away in Scotland over the last two seasons and notched up 66 appearances for the Scottish Premiership club.
Fish’s time at Easter Road has led to interest and he is now in line to be sold by Manchester United.

Manchester United are suggested to view Fish’s loan at Hibernian as one of the most successful they have arranged in a big feather in Hibs’ cap.
Multiple Championship clubs have showed interest in taking Fish off Manchester United’s hands.

Cardiff though have persisted and are now set to win the race to sign Fish permanently.

The move is set to be finalised this week and Fish will make the move to Wales.

Didn't we have good loans from premier league teams and ended up just above relegation places several times Wonder what those clubs thought of choice of club they used? Only exceptional talent make it to 1st team in premier league but that doesn't mean they're not bad if dont make it. Maybe bulut is trying yo get balance right.

Many PL clubs could put out 2 or even 3 teams that would prosper in the Championship so there are definitely rich pickings to be had there.
