Do promoted clubs’ owners really want to stay up?

Mon Aug 19, 2024 10:14 pm

Quite interesting from Gary Neville on MNF tonight.

He said he thinks Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton will all go down.

But also said that he thinks that the owners of promoted clubs will just have a target to make £60m out of their season in the PL (on top of parachute payments).

That way they can improve their stadium, get a new training ground, sort out the club’s long term finances etc.

That way they will be better equipped to stay in the PL next time they get promoted.

He said he hopes he’s wrong because the gap is getting bigger between the two leagues. But worries that this is now the mindset of teams coming up.

Ned said same thing last season? It's been evident for past two seasons promoted clubs are not spending enough to stay up.....if you think about it they get massive £100m+ just for being in premier league yes costs go up but the way spend money leaves plenty left and unquestionably got relegation clauses so wages go back to championship level then get parachute payments on top! I've said years ago clubs are changing way use it originally was for extra expenses of being in premier league but that ceases to be case anymore its used on buying best championship level players so can go up again musnt forget upto 4 yrs ago hardly any relegated club went straight back up now past 2 seasons its two out 3 with other in top 6 big shift in power at deprement of championship.

Think you’re right Allan.

Look at Ipswich, mainly buying top Championship players like Szmodics and not PL players. Means they have a good chance of going up when they go back down.

Luton have barely spent any money this summer after coming down. Using most of the money they’ve gained to improve their stadium to increase their sustainability for the future.

So I think Neville is right. To be fair, he does know about this stuff as he’s an EFL club owner himself.

I think there has to be a way of levelling up the leagues.

Personally I would like:

- 20 to 30% of all PL transfer fees to be distributed equally between the clubs from Championship down.

- Remove spending caps and FFP rules. Let the PL spend what they want but take a cut to support lower league teams. If Man City want to spend a billion to buy Yamal or the new Ronaldo, let them crack on, each club in Championship, L1 and L2 receive 2.8m each at a 20% cut.

- Put rules in that stadiums and training facilities have to be up to a certain standard before they can spend the PL transfer windfall on players... This brings up the standards across all levels of British football

- This could then ripple down the football pyramid with 20 to 30% of Championship, L1 and L2 fees going down the pyramid. Again improving the game at grass roots level.

Ned I've said for many seasons championship is getting disjointed and it will be like premier a 2 tier one the haves and have nots....did post last season the parachute payments equate to something like 40% of the efl monies from premier league so proportionally favours clubs with parachute payments

I would side with probably not the first time they go up.

A lot of clubs are clever, buy players who are proven championship players who "could" make the step up. If they do well in the prem and they go down, sell on for a profit. If they stay at the club, they have a top championship team.

The parachute payments are what the clever clubs want, building for the future.

Just a shame we didn't.

This is a recent avent prior to 3 seasons ago all clubs wasted the parachute and premier money hence few went back up....now owners are savvy and manipulate the money as described in this thread...... yes city did waste the money but so did everyone else but "IF" we go up hopefully club will learn from others now.?
