The old days

Tue Sep 10, 2024 9:32 pm

Lately I've been reminiscing about the the old ninian park days when I remember my old man taking me to watch my first city game, I was 12 yrs old, if I remember it right we were in the old 3rd division and it was a rainy mid week fixture, although I don't recall who we played or what the score was the one thing that I do remember was the atmosphere, the passion, although at the age of 12 I didn't know what that was, that was it I was hooked bluebirds in heart in my blood, now 43 yrs later I wonder what happened to our club where's the atmosphere, the passion it's like sitting in a church service been scrutinized for any comments you might make, god forbid you get excited and use a swear word, I will always support my club, my hometown but right now I'm really struggling.

Anyone else feeling it to

i think money ruined football, it used to be about working all week then going to the game with the lads and having a good day.

it also dont help that the club want us (canton) as far away from the away support as possible.

to be honest i rather away games than home now, its just not the same.

give me our piss smelling old lady back any day of the week! :occasion5: :bluescarf:

Everything has moved on from 40 years ago. The world is a different place.

I guess I am a few years older than you, I was hooked in the early 80's, I took my mate to his first game i think it was Luton home and we were relegated to Div 3, we stayed behind and sang for ages after the game. Great times

But let's not forget it was 5,500 attendance even taking a few off for income purposes, that dropped to 4500, then 3,800 or lower.

Hooliganism killed the game. It didn't worry me, I loved it but I was a lippy kid from Llanedeyrn with almost Olympic speed when being chased. Then I went to college and fell out away from the scene, until Eddie May but a little older with more responsibilities and i couldn't be knicked, which felt like a 10% chance even when doing nothing in the wrong part of town at an away game.

I think the Canton stand is a red herring, it will help the banter back and forth but when we are getting battered by Leeds there will barely be a murmur.

Football has changed, most kids go with their parents, I doubt those kids would have gone in the 90's. It used to be a working-class sport with middle classes in the posher seats, but now it is a middle-class sport with those who with space for those who make the atmosphere.

You are not alone! loads of us feel like it. Felt like it for a while now.

You say you cant remember the game you went to. If we were in the old third division it would have been the 82-83 season. The Bennett brothers, Jeff Hemmerman, Bob Hatton etc. It could have been Arsenal in the League cup. Good atmosphere that night if i recall though dont know if it was raining

Those were the days! And thats what we used to sing at the time.

Specials were great. I always remember the excitement as the train pulled in at Cardiff General as it was called in those days. Sometimes they had to use two engines to pull it, there were so many coaches.

As has been said.
It's a middle class sport now.
All about money and percievement.

I used every stand in Ninians park. A few hundred SC together. Like brothers.
No matter where you were from....

The banter, the jokes, the clothes, the characters, the passion, the songs, the celebrations, the pre and post game... I'm so lucky to have had that sparkle in my life. I take my son now. It's so different at ccs, no energy there and old faces looking like they miss the old days too...
