Sol Bamba - Club Connections

Normally in this section, several players to have played for both clubs are mentioned. But for this game, only one needs to be talked about.

Sol Bamba made 56 appearances for Leeds United, scoring five goals.

He went on to join us where he famously was part of the team that got promoted to the Premier League.

During his time with the Bluebirds, he scored ten goals in 112 appearances.

This is our first home game since the sad news of his death. Both clubs will pay tribute to Sol ahead of kick off.

Rival Players

The most well known ex-Swansea player for Leeds is Joel Piroe.

He scored 14 league goals last season.

The Opposition's Manager

Daniel Farke has been Leeds manager since last July.

He took them to the play-off final last season, losing to Southampton.

He is best known for his time at Norwich, who he twice took to the Premier League from this division.

Opposition Dangerous Players

Ethan Ampadu was considered one of the best players in the Championship last season, playing in all their league games including play-off games.

Mateo Joseph has been starting up front while Patrick Bamford is injured.

Head To Head

Leeds are unbeaten in four of the last five meetings against us, with two wins and two draws.

Our only win in that time came back in June 2020, in front of no supporters as it was during COVID.

What a game to get our first win.

If Bulut is still in place then he needs to change out approach and not just personnel. He won’t though so we’ll get spanked

Leeds United tasted defeat for the first time in the Championship during the 2024/25 campaign as they were beaten 1-0 by Burnley at Elland Road on Saturday.

Luca Koleosho scored the only goal of the game in the first half, after Manor Solomon's slip, by running down the right flank before firing into the bottom corner of Illan Meslier's net.

It was a bitterly disappointing afternoon in West Yorkshire for Daniel Farke because his side created enough chances and had enough of the ball to win the match.

If Bullshit is in charge Leeds win comfortably, if he is gone and somebody else sets up the team I think a draw is a possibility.

I am the biggest advocate for changing our style of play and being more attacking but ironically I hope he plays his boring football for this game. If we try something new and open up, we’ll be playing into Leeds hands and they’ll tear us apart.

The situation we are in, with the players confidence and feeling around the club, I don’t think we’d have a chance if we borrowed Pep for a week.

Looking forward to paying my respects to Sol Bamba but that’s all I’m looking forward to.

Play 2 up front. Defeat is on the cards so what will we learn with Kanga isolated. Get some legs around him and eliminate the scrum in the middle of the park that kill the tempo.

He won't, obviously. We'll lose, likely. :banghead:

Leeds United return to action in the Championship on Saturday as they travel away from Elland Road to take on Cardiff City in Wales in their sixth league outing of the season.

The Whites will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing 1-0 defeat to Burnley in West Yorkshire last weekend, thanks to a goal from Luca Koleosho.

Daniel Farke's side will be without Dan James once again as the Wales international remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, which is expected to keep him out until after the international break in October.

Daniel Farke could put a nail in Erol Bulut’s coffin at Cardiff City by starting Ao Tanaka for Leeds United on Saturday (21 September).

The Whites will be keen to bounce back with a win as they travel to the Welsh capital after falling to defeat last time out against Burnley.

The manager is likely to be pleased with how his side performed at Elland Road despite losing 1-0 to their promotion rivals.

Bulut is under increasing pressure at Cardiff having overseen a return of just one point from five Championship matches this season and there is one tactical change Farke can make that could really crank up the pressure on the Bluebirds boss.

The Bluebirds look to play out from the back where possible, a ploy that has got them into trouble in the early stages of the season.

Farke could make a change to his midfield to catch the home side’s defence lacking at the top end of the pitch to take advantage.
This may have to be done without Ethan Ampadu who is a concern after suffering a knock challenging Hannibal against the Clarets [Yorkshire Evening Post, 18 September].

If the Wales international is fit, Ilia Gruev could drop out of the Leeds starting XI to accommodate Tanaka.

The summer signing will be able to get further forward and pester defenders while the former Chelsea man sits back and shields the backline.

A change could be made if Ampadu is injured, which will likely see Gruev maintain his role in the starting XI from the Burnley game.

Josh Smith appointed as referee for Cardiff vs Leeds -

Leeds were left frustrated at their failure to be awarded a penalty last weekend following a challenge from Joe Worrall on Manor Solomon inside the box.

That said, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher says the referee made the correct decision in not pointing to the spot, though Leeds will be hoping for more luck from the officials this weekend.

Smith took charge of Leeds’ Boxing Day defeat at Preston North End last season in which he sent Meslier off just after half-time for an apparent headbutt on Milutin Osmajic.

While Meslier clearly gave Smith a decision to make with his antics, it was certainly on the softer side and left Farke very unhappy with the decision.

In fact, Farke was so frustrated by what he saw that he claimed football is ‘done’ if that is what players are getting sent off for these days.

In total, he has officiated six Leeds matches during his career, with the only defeat actually coming in that aforementioned game at Deepdale.

Leeds have also come out on the winning side in three of them, against Accrington Stanley (Jan 2023), Plymouth (Nov 2023) and Hull City (Apr 2024).

The two draws came on the opening day of last season, incidentally at home to Cardiff, and in the play-off semi-final first leg at Norwich City, in which Billy Sharp criticised him for not giving Leeds a penalty.

Leeds hit with "major" injury worry before Cardiff -

As reported by the BBC's Adam Pope, Leeds United winger Manor Solomon is a “major” doubt for their game against the Bluebirds. The 25-year-old joined the Whites on a season-long loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur last month and has so far featured in two games.

But he looks a doubt to make it three against Cardiff, as Pope shared news from Farke's presser at Thorp Arch: “Manor Solomon is the major injury doubt with a back problem ahead of Saturday’s Championship fixture at Cardiff City. Patrick Bamford expected to be involved.”
