CAFC Forum - Nathan Jones

Tue Sep 24, 2024 2:10 pm

Their fans seem divided - some are of the opinion he would leave them right away for the Cardiff job, others believe he has a long contract with CAFC and that he basically has full control there.

One comment though caught my eye. See below:

"Where CAFC are in the respective League One tables after 5 games -

Shots on target per game = 23rd

Xg (zzz) = 21st

Possession = 19th

Goals = 14th

Clean Sheets = 1st"

Last season we finished 12th, fluttered with the play offs.

BUT people weren't happy with our defensive football.

Charlton are set up very similar to what people complained about last season.

I thought we wanted an attacking manager??

That’s why personally I’d have Schumacher over Jones, plays nice quick football, plus there would be no compo, unfortunately us fans don’t have a say though and I fear that tan is going to bring someone cheap in that either hasnt got managerial experience or is not considered up and coming.

I'd have Schumacher or Ismael over Jones.

Definitely wouldn't want Giggs.

If it ends up being Jones, we will be back to the same conversations on here as last season I.e

"I'm paying for my season ticket and I want to watch exciting football, not defensive football"

But that league position is unsustainable with stats like that.

They will eventually fall off.

Last season, people said League position didn't matter, when Bulut had us in reach of play offs playing shite defensive football.

So which is it that fans want?

Of course it matters, or were they happy to get demoted, whoever "they" were that said that.

I asked the question of "would you rather us go down?" And some of the answers stated that they would be happier going down playing exciting football.

Looking at a larger sample size, with less 'let's find an issue' of a viewpoint, I've gone straight points per match (ppm), which ultimately is the measure of success for a manager.

Nathan Jones.
Charlton Athletic Played: 24 PPM: 1.46
Southampton FC Played 14 PPM1.07
Luton Town Played: 133 PPM: 1.49
Stoke City Played : 38 PPM: 0.89
Luton Town Played: 170 PPM: 1.82
Total Played: 379 Average PPM: 1.35

#2 on the poll is Giggs. 0 points as he's never managed a club. Just dusted his brothers wife.

#3 on the poll is Stephen Schumacher

Stoke City Played: 32 PPM: 1.41
Plymouth Argyle Played: 108 PPM: 1.83
Total Played: 140 Average PPM: 1.62

Valerian Ismail
Watford FC 40 1.20
Besiktas JK 18 1.72
West Bromwich Albion 31 1.45
Barnsley FC 44 1.84
LASK LASK 50 1.98
Total Played: 183 Average PPM: 1.64

Compare to Dave Jones

Hartlepool United 17 0.76
Sheffield Wednesday 77 1.31
Cardiff City 320 1.53
Wolverhampton Wanderers 180 1.44
Southampton FC 106 1.14
Stockport County 21 1.24
Total Played: 720 Average PPM:1.24

Neil Warnock Average PPM: 1.40 (1.43 for Cardiff City) {Too long to copy & sort!}

Then finally, Malky

Ross County FC 107 1.10
Wigan Athletic 25 0.76
Cardiff City 125 1.60
Watford FC 99 1.25
Total Played: 356 Average PPM:1.18

A large variable is number of games played, but I wouldn't have an issue with Nathan Jones, Schumacher or Ismail. The reasons Jones is my first choice is that he's a fan of the club and he was the 'Luton Project'. Any of those three would be signs of progressiong regards recruitment, to me.

As the saying goes there are lies, damned lies and statistics.

Possession stats are crap as they can include endlessly passing the ball around the back and can be due to inability to break a side down. Just like us

Sunderland have one of the worst possession stats in the league but are 2nd. We are 15th but bottom.

This is a good post.

Agree that it's points that matter ultimately.
