Question? , good football or winning?

Wed Sep 25, 2024 4:52 pm

Over the years the styles of different managers has been totally different since Dave Jones left, my best season of enjoyment have been under malky and warnock when the football was dire but we knew how to win games so what do people prefer ? .

I stick by what I said last season Wez.

No point playing attractive football if we aren't winning games.

I'd take promotion with shite football over the alternative every time.

Good question though, as lots of people said the opposite last season, and the same people want Nathan Jones in charge. Complete contradiction.

I agree with you what do you remember when you look back at a game it's the result , if your winning it means your scoring, the problem with bulut was the football was negative and we were still losing. It's a result game .

Winning. I couldn’t care less if we had 2% possession and win 1-0. Success is the name of the game. Feck all this fannying around with it at the back.

People need to realise that you can't win with poor quality football anymore. Not for long anyway at this level.

The whole idea of getting promotion with Warnock style football is over, it just doesn't work anymore. This is proven by the way he failed at Boro.

You only have to look at too four last season - Leicester, Ipswich, Leeds and Southampton. All four played high quality football. Burnley the same the year before when they won the league.

So the two go hand in hand.

Football has changed drastically since we were promoted six years ago, people need to accept that.

I disagree. Effective football is effective football. Pep and Swansea have tricked everyone into thinking faffing about with the ball is the only way to play football.

Agreed, it's not always about passing the ball around and having "nice on the eye football"

Re: Question? , good football or winning?

Football is getting more and more like basketball and I don't like it.

Once a team loses the ball they immediately fall back into their defensive set up (two banks of four) whilst the attacking side pass the ball from side to side trying to probe for an opening (easy enough against us this season) and it's like a game of attack v defence.

Then when the attacking team lose the ball they fall back into their defensive set up (two banks of four) and the defending team have a go at attacking.

Every corner there seems to be about sixteen players in the six yard box and almost no defending team leave anybody outside their own penalty area so when the ball gets cleared there is no outlet and it just comes straight back at them.

Football is dull - no midfield battles and flair players stifled by their role in the defensive set up.

I'd like us to get the ball up the field quickly - long passes (not aimless hoofing) or short quick FORWARD passes - whichever way we can get the ball as near to the opposition goal as possible.

You can get short term success by playing rubbish football but not long term success.

But as we saw with Bulut, playing the nice way without knowing how can be suicidal.

Winning football is good football.

It has always been a balance between skill and physicality, it's changing from 6"2' monster CM's to 5"7' sprint all day, getting to the ball quickly lads but you still need to get the balance right. Over the last decade, we have been primarily an athletic team with just enough skill, we have sacrificed our athletic ability and not increased the skill. You can say possession and attacking football all day long but we can't do it as our championship opposition are too good on both accounts. We can't dominate physically or skillfully

I'd prefer to watch Spurs or Klopps Liverpool than Citeh, I found i love watching the Bundesliga recently, its all attack getting the ball forward much quicker. Its not aimless up to a big man to win flick-ons, we haven't seen that since the "attacking, beautiful football" of DJ.

All this attacking football mantra is a con, it doesn't exist. I've left Ninian and the early days of CCS just as pissed off when we managed to throw away a 2-0 lead under DJ than the "boring" winning of Malky and Warnock.

Professional sport is about winning, style points only matter to journalists or pundits.

All i know is, the happiest I have been as a City fan was under Dave Jones. And he won nothing. Blackpool at Wembley hurt more than the two finals and two relegations, because the style of football was good, and the group of players he assembled fought for the badge and liked to play the game the way I like to see it played, he wasnt perfect, he made some big mistakes, but I loved that team, the last side I can genunely say that about.

If we won every game for the rest of the season and the football remained the same boring negative football I would not renew. I was 50/50 this year as I was so bored but my daughter wanted to continue. I don't get people who say as long as we win. Can you seriously tell me you could continue to watch this for the next 10 years as long as we were winning. It's been pathetic!

Each to their own of course

I would rather decent football, enjoyable, entertaining with the fight that the badge and fans deserve over boring predictable anti football even if it achieves success. Its a divisive question, a good one, but Dave Jones over Malky and Warnock any day. I loved our promotions but throughout those seasons it wasnt vastly entertaining. And often strangleholds over expression.

Success is what excactly for us? Promotion to the EPL? We were poor on both occasions, great experience for the fans in terms of top opposition away days and Match of the Day, but soul destroying on field. Happy to be entertained with consistent good football and be a top 10 club in the championship than scraping the barrel of the Prem and be a yo yo club playing the opposite. The dream is being a sustainable Prem club playing the right way, Brighton and in some ways Brentford have shown that this doesnt have to be a dream.

Each to their own, but right now I would take boring football for a while if it gets us away from the bottom!!!!!!!

You're right, it's a divisive question, as it's subjective.

Most of us here have grown up watching City. I'm used to shite football. I'm used to us conceding in the last few minutes of a game. I'm used to us being ran badly in one way or another.

What I enjoy these days, is seeing City with 3 points. Long ball boring football but 3 points? Great! Tiki taka with 3 points? Great! One shot on target but we win? Great!

Football is about results and we have had our fair share of shite results over the years. For me now it's about seeing us win.

As I said, current predicament, I agree, temporarily!!! win at any cost. And its because Im also used to the regularity of shite served in my four decades of shouting from the stands that I absolutely crave good football! I have lost a lot of match day ritual pals to local football because of this very reason, proof that there are many that want good football over winning without it.

Yes your not wrong, I called him dour at the time! Downplaying the derby, poor treatment of Adam Matthews, not giving Darcy a chance at centre half and so on.

But it was good football! Players playing in their best positions! Players you could relate to and get you singing! Hindsight huh!

Re: Question? , good football or winning?

Winning is obviously most important. I thought some of Warnock's football was alright, especially at the start of the promotion season, having loads of possession and passing the ball around in your half bores me more. Warnocks teams hit fast on the counter attack and roughed teams up, plus we was winning. Hoilett and Mendez lang flying down the wings I didn't mind it. Premier league then is a totally different ball game but we was unlucky.

Re: Question? , good football or winning?

Good football leads to winning football. I think the distinction should be between fancy football or good football.
Any type of football can have short term results. But over the long term, shit football will result in overall shit results. Hence why we’re at the foot of the table.
Good football will be both effective and attractive.

I just want to watch Cardiff knowing they will make chances.

ATM i just feel like we will never get a chance and i hate that

If we had lost to Leeds and i can think back to the 4 or 5 chances we had atleast i have some comfort in that loss knowing another day a couple could of gone in

Now i just wonder why am i turning up

So for me if the team creates chances thats football
