A forum for all things Cardiff City

Football fans typically over estimate how big their club is, this happens at every club.
Are City a massive club right now though?
We have spent 2 seasons in the Premier league, relegated both times.
Haven't won a major trophy since 1927 - (The championship trophy I don't think counts here), and have spent between 1975-2003 in the lower leagues.
We are unable to fill our stadium.
We have so much potential. We are a capital city.
But in my opinion we aren't a 'massive club'

No, never have been and never will be, we fill a demographic in and around the City, thats it.

We seem to have this debate every few months.
My answer is always the same. A size of a club is based on history, consistent size of attendances, facilities and how they are viewed outside of their own bubble.
So you have the elite clubs like Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City, Spurs, Chelsea etc.
Past them you have the obvious big clubs like Villa, Newcastle, Everton, West Ham etc.
I would also say the likes of Wolves, Wednesday, Leicester, Forest, Sunderland and others are big. They consistently have high crowds and big histories.
I don't put us in that bracket. We don't consistently have big crowds. We have had limited success, both recently and historically.
Most importantly, people outside of our bubble do not see us as a big club.
The best way to judge the size of a club is to see how others look at them.
Others see us as a middle Championship club which is exactly what we are. No more, no less.

Cardiff’s metropolitan population, taking in nearby Newport, exceeds one million people.
A totally unique one club Capital City
13th highest City population in Britain beating Newcastle and Nottingham.
Modern stadia and facilities
I think thats POTENTIALLY a massive club. The clown running us, is taking us in the other direction. I still believe Sam saw the potential, saw the vision, just ran out of money. I believe you never lose that vision so would have him back in a heartbeat, those years were fun, a roller coaster, but fun and exciting. C'mon kids lets have your EPL jerseys heres a brand new City one, support your local team! Really good marketing, in touch with community and catchment areas, in touch with our youth set up, and it transferred onto the pitch , best football I have watched as a City fan, goals! Attempts on goal!! Crowds on the rise! Atmosphere! Really miss those days. We deserve it again after what Tan has put us through.
So yeah could be a massive club

Only a relatively few clubs in the country can be deemed as massive and we are not one of them.
Sunderland have the potential to be one based on their crowds but on achievements then you would have to say no.
We would fall into a group that contains Palace, Norwich, Derby, Sheffield Utd, Middlesbrough etc. Two promotions to the PL plus two major cup finals in the last 16 years have cemented our place in this group.

Simple answer...NO
We are not a football city, unlike places such as Newcastle, Liverpool, the Manchester clubs, Sunderland etc who's fans turn up in big numbers no matter how the team are performing.

In the same mode as birmingham coventry stoke cities but not big following ,
today we are no better than blackpool bolton milwall

Relative to what?
To Newport County... yes..
To Real Madrid... no.
I dont buy into this debate. There is no correct answer, only the forum traffic bean counter wins.

There’s certainly the potential to become a really big club and that’s evidenced by achieving some success in recent years in spite of the decision making from the top. Better decision making may have led to longer stays in the Prem, who knows?
We certainly don’t share the history of many clubs but few could equal the level of potential support there is. It makes you wonder what a Hollywood actor could achieve in getting people interested. Very possibly more than Fu Tan Chu!

Massive no but we were getting bigger up until the rebrand ,seemed to be heading in a good direction until a guy that don’t even go to games wanted to be lucky red

Ned why do most pundits consistently describe us as
a big club when referring to us? Never heared us being described as a middle club maybe small club by our rivals and jealous fans ! Buy agree about who you say are big clubs..... we are a big club but not with same meaning as Newcastle ect.... .see I don't class Leicester any bigger than us but its just an opinion... Birmingham is a big club but even they had to close parts of ground because not enough fans attending previous seasons being big doesnt mean your bigger than us ... we are a big club but unfortunately we are hampered by our owner from proving it.

Too many egg chasers in South Wales, this impacts on Cardiffs drawing power.

Absolutely nothing to do with egg chasers impacting on our drawing power. Put simply, our failure to sustain top level football is the main reason. Even then, there would likely be a drop-off of attendances once our fans grew bored of fighting relegation every season or occasionally securing a mid table position.
As an aside, Leicester Tigers average 22,000 for their home games but their football team is still well supported.

I don't think there is an appetite for live sport in South Wales.
According to the media, we are a Rugby nation but we know that is bollox, we are a piss-up/occasional game crowd. A trip or two to see a game then watch it on the box with a can of Stella or down the pub. There are a fair few who have massive opinions on the city that rarely go nowadays. Get to the FA cup semi or a promotion run in and we could sell out Wembley twice over.
We are not a big club, we are a mid-sized second-tier club.
There are probably 2million people between Chepstow and Llanelli, i doubt 40k regularly watch professional sports live
