Gavin Ward retired from playing at the end of the 2010–11 season.
Gavin Ward aged 54.
On 18 July 2011, he left his post at Gainsborough to become Goalkeeping Coach at Shrewsbury Town.
He was registered as a player after second-choice goalkeeper Joe Anyon picked up an injury in October 2012, with Ward taking his place on the bench.
On 4 July 2013, Ward agreed to be Goalkeeping Coach at Nottingham Forest but things did not work out for Ward who left Forest and had been out of main stream football for 10 years, but has been helping out at QPR with party-time scouting duties.
On 27 September 2024, Ward agreed to be interim Goalkeeping Coach at Cardiff City.

Remember him fondly and well as another great Bluebird keeper and I remember that chant with us all sway our hands in the air, as if we were saving a ball to the left and a ball to the right…!

I remember him well.
Had a peg like a skud missile!
Decent keeper for us.
