VAR question

Watching the Newcastle game. Second pen shout for Newcastle. While VAR were checking it Newcastle almost scored. What if they’d scored that and VAR said it was a penalty? Would they have the goal and the pen?

Didn't watch it but if it was a different phase of play then they'd have had to go back to the penalty.

Only way the goal could stand is if it was the same phase of play.
