Certainly last season and early part of this, I felt having one or both consistently in the team showed our weakness in these areas of the park, but I'd note three things.
Firstly, from where Tanner came from, in terms of the level of football he was playing, and his wildly inconsistent performances, he has come on leaps and bounds and his defensive part of the game has improved massively. As such I believe he is, at the moment, deserving of his place in the starting line up, and, if he carries on his improvements, he will become a saleable asset. Maybe not multi Millions, but certainly a healthy sum.
Secondly, I was absolutely not a fan of Colwill. Hype had got to him, poor decision making, not a game changer. However, last few games his flicks and tricks are working, its giving him confidence, he's added aggression to his game and he is beginning to be a player that I feel can start to influence a game.
Thirdly, and most importantly, when these two play together, they bring the best out in each other. Weve had good pairings of good players in the past, notably strikers, but I have seen on a number occasions that when they both play together it galvanizes their performances.
If we continue this improvement in form I cannot see us struggling, but I would say we need to have luck when it comes to injuries. Our depth aint good and Mr Tan aint giving us noting for the January window no doubt!

I agree with all of this. Although I will say that Colwill struggled a bit yesterday against better opposition. May just be a one off and I'm sure he's raring to go against Norwich to put in another good performance.
But I have to add that our most important player and our best player is Alex Robertson.
He showed yesterday that he can play well against all types of opponent and it was another strong display.
When he plays, we are instantly a better team. He allows others like Colwill, Tanner, Turnbull and Robinson to play freely and play in the space.
I was told by someone in and around the Man City academy when I found out he was signing for us that within two years he will bring in offers of an eight figure sum.
Everything I've seen of him for us backs that up.

You could say Robertson and Turnbull struggled against better opposition as we has no foothold in the middle of the park, especially in the second half.

Second half we were clearly had to defend a lot and I thought Robertson (and Turnbull to be fair until he went off) did that very well.
You can read what you want into ratings from the stats, but the fact that Robertson was over 7.5 does highlight that it was another strong display.
Like I say, it's clear that he's our best player in my view and doubt he'll be with us in a couple of years so enjoy it while it lasts.

I think fatigue and a pumped up opposition who haven’t won for a few games was the main reason for us struggling in midfield. Add to Turnbull and Robertson only playing together 3 times and Turnbull barely getting any game time. As they play more and mature in to the roles I think they will become more dominant. They are quality players.
