A forum for all things Cardiff City

Dave Jones 68 years old has not been involved in football since he was sacked by Sheffield Wednesday in 2016 and then after relegating Hartlepool to the Non League 2017.
Well Over 7 years out of football.
Dave Jones was Cardiff City’s Manager for 6 years with one of the most talented Squads, but failed in 6 years to get Cardiff promoted.
Michael Chopra told me Dave Jones is desperate to be a manager again.
Wednesday 13th November 2024Dave Jones :
"I'd love to go back and be the manager of Cardiff City. I felt hard done by when I left, considering what I'd done for the club. I didn't finish it off. But I'm sure there are lots of reasons, like whenever we got somewhere we had to sell, but that was my remit.
"But the club then had a DNA and went on to do reasonably well. And now the last four or five years it's not worked out for anyone who has come in.”
“But if you keep chopping and changing managers, or you've not got football people coming in, then that can happen. I don't know, because you'd have to be in it to see it, live it, breathe it and find out where the problems are.”
"A lot of people who work in football clubs, their hearts are in the right place, but they haven't got that mentality within the football environment to push it on. It's quite a dog eat dog environment and you have to be ruthless in what you do. But the biggest thing you have to do in any club is find its DNA, what the club is about."
"Part and parcel of it, when I was there, was that it was all about the culture and identity of the club," Jones tells WalesOnline.
"People who run businesses feel that running a football club is the same, but it's totally different. The football world is a crazy world.“

He built what was probably the best and most entertaining Cardiff side I have seen in my 50 plus years of watching them. We had the best squad in the League but unfortunately a bad run of results, a few injuries to key players at vital times and a certain Mr.Warnock ensured less talented squads were promoted.

No it’s not.
Michael Chopra told me Jones is desperate for a job.
He’s also enquired to our board.

I don’t think this will happen but who knows?
He enjoys his golf.

Living in the past with this one 8 years out of football
and as much as i liked that decade,
toshack could also come back in some capacity.

Jonesy maybe could be a mentor or DOF to Rizla

He should pick himself up, dust himself down, and fcuk off...
Way too long out of the game and football has moved on since then.
However, there was some great football while he was here though.

Jones had he strengths and the football was very entertaining.
Tactically though we weren’t there, how many times did we play the Jacks and just not be able to cope when they simply played 5 in midfield.
He left his coaching team to pick all that up and heavily relied on Terry Burton.
Times moved on and I doubt Dave Jones has, unfortunately

Would end in disaster. The ship has well and truly sailed.

I think in some Utopian world this would be good, as I was a supporter of Dave Jones the manager (not always the man) when he was here before; but surely his management days are over now and if anything, an advisory (rather than DoF) role under Vincent Tan would be the only possible outcome…?
We know Vincent Tan likes Dave Jones but if it is the case he (DJ) has been in touch, then surely it’s a no-go (at least at this point)…?
As I said elsewhere and from the start, my belief is that Vincent Tan wants Omer Riza to be a success and take the reins full-time; hence the cessation of ‘rumours’ doing the rounds…

Would depend who his back room team is tbh it could work .

Still have nightmares about that home game against Middlesbrough where we were 0-3 down after about 20 minutes.
And the play off final when Jones brought on Kelvin Etuhu when he had Ross Mccormack on the bench.
And not starting Ramsey in the Cup Final
Not for me.
Yesterday's man.

Deluded, but the people who run the club probably make him believe it could happen.
We played great football under him but he ultimately failed to get promoted with the best team he could wish for.
Yesterday's man. Never a good idea to go back - that applies to Warnock too.

he allowed a drink culture, that cost us promotion, he is an arrogant shit and should never be allowed near our club again - or maybe that is what tan wants, another idiot to control

Football has moved on now. He been out of the game for few years now.

Not for me time to move on

Arrogant, delusional with a huge chip on his shoulder
His acceptance of low standards and a drinking culture cost us promotion
If he couldn’t control his players 15 years ago he’s got no chance now
Even the 3 clowns wouldn’t be stupid enough to employ his now!!

In many ways, it might be argued to did keep his players under control by allowing them to be themselves…
He got the best out most of his players, including Michael Chopra, Jay Bothroyd (who got an England cap playing for us in the Championship) and other ‘mavericks’. They only really let him/us down on a handful of occasions; sadly, two of those being the Play-off game and (mainly Bothroyd) the Blackpool Play-off Final

Chris, sorry but I disagree. The culture at the club wasn't healthy.
He may well have improved some players but the fact we didn't get promoted with the squad he had means he will always be seen as someone who played good football but ultimately failed.
I hope and don't think he'll be managing in "this part of the world" anytime soon.

Your Spot on and I knew him personally and he was a horrible person and he was arrogant and very lazy and a bottler.
Jones had NO control of his players, they were always out the night before a game drinking and gambling.
He would play golf half the time they were training and and would arrive in a golf buggy.
Win nothing in 6 yrs.
Dave Jones had one of the biggest wage budgets any manager had ever had before.

He was dealing with a Cardiff that the reality was he had to sell his best players year on year and re-invest that money. He wasn’t able to be picky about characters etc he had to get players that would improve the team and hope that the rest would fall into place.
Unfortunately some of those characters didn’t use their talent wisely (Chopra) and become bad apples whose infection spread.
If DJ had the money Malky had to spend I firmly believe we would have had a team and squad that was ready for the Premier League. Can never prove it either way of course.

No thanks, his time has come and gone. No more old school dinosaurs required, football has moved on.
Thu Nov 14, 2024 10:29 am
Massive no from me despite having some of my happiest years as a City fan under his stewardship. Majority of the time it was my kind of football with my kind of players. I think he was unlucky as i think the league was of a more competitive and higher quality than what it is today.
But I never took to him as a person.
And never go back, Warnock included. Jones so long out of a sport thats really changed in that time.
Never go back. Ask Everton fans with Howard Kendall.

Agree

Bringing on Kelvin Etuhu for Bothroyd when McCormack was on the bench, after 15 mins against Blackpool will haunt me for life.

Dave Jones brought in players we can only dream about now.
Sadly those days are long gone.
Success now is 4th off the bottom.

Agreed !
Mackay was the only manager who didn’t HAVE to sell every year.
Jones played wonderful football but he wasn’t a great communicator and I do understand why people don’t like him.
But let’s not re-write history by saying he had a huge budget. At best he had the budget that he created by scouting/improving previously unknown/underperforming players.
I wouldn’t have him back but I loved his time here.
