Preston North End came away from a wet and windy Hillsborough with a point after Sheffield Wednesday fought back to claim a 1-1 draw.

Emil Riis had given North End a deserved lead in the first half after a quick throw in and a lovely ball in from Mads Frokjaer. Riis could have probably added another shortly after when he was found by Sam Greenwood and Brad Potts came close with the follow up.

Preston North End predicted team vs Cardiff City as Paul Heckingbottom surely has easy decision -

It's a trip to south Wales on Wednesday night for the Lilywhites
Preston North End manager Paul Heckingbottom is unlikely to tinker too much with his team selection on Wednesday night.

After drawing 1-1 at Sheffield Wednesday last weekend, it’s a trip to Cardiff City up next for the Lilywhites. Robbie Brady has recently returned to training, but did not make the squad at Hillsborough and will be eased back into match action.

With everyone else fully fit - and assuming there were no knocks suffered in the Owls clash - it will be a case of considering changes to his XI. Most players put in strong performances against Danny Rohl’s outfit; PNE played well for the vast majority and it was a contest they ought to have won.

Between the sticks, Freddie Woodman came straight back into the side after his one-game suspension. The number one saved a penalty, but let in a tame Wednesday goal. Having recalled him immediately though, it would be a surprise if Heckingbottom didn’t stick by the shot-stopper.

Liam Lindsay is back in the fold after injury, but Jack Whatmough didn’t do a great deal wrong and will hope to retain his place in the team. That said, the Scot could well return - having been preferred to Whatmough, in the heart of defence, prior to his injury.

Out wide, Brad Potts put in a big shift and was visibly fatigued in tough conditions at Hillsborough. But, with Brady not back yet - and Jeppe Okkels having not made the squad last weekend - another start for Potts seems on the cards. Or, Heckingbottom could turn to former Bluebirds man, Josh Bowler.

The 25-year-old did start against West Brom recently and put in a steady display. Up top, Emil Riis should be given the nod again after scoring two in two. Ali McCann, Stefan Thordarson, Mads Frokjaer and Sam Greenwood all impressed in South Yorkshire and will most likely stay in.

With NO Wins in their last 10 Championship games:

Our midweek visitors head into the game sat in 17th position in the Sky Bet Championship.

The Lilywhites have struggled on the road this campaign, with the side drawing four and losing two of their six fixtures on the road.

Their home form has been much better, recording 14 points in ten games at Deepdale.

Last time out, North End drew 1-1 away from home to Sheffield Wednesday. An early goal from Emil Riis Jakobsen was enough to secure a point on their travels.

Preston North End’s manager is Paul Heckingbottom, who was appointed in August this year.

Heckingbottom started his managerial career in charge of Barnsley, guiding the Tykes to promotion to the Championship and winning the Football League Trophy.

He then went on to join Leeds United in February 2018, where he finished in 13th place in the Championship before being dismissed that summer.

Heckingbottom then took a role at Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership. Hibs finished in fifth position, but after after only winning one of their first eleven league matches in the 2019/20 season, he was dismissed from his role.

The Barnsley-born coach then took a role as Sheffield United’s U23s manager, before being appointed First Team coach in November 2021. He gained promotion to the Premier League with the Blades in 2023 but was sacked later that year with Sheffield United sitting at the bottom of the Premier League.

Preston have not won for 10 Championship games.

Since taking over at Deepdale, Heckingbottom has a win percentage of 17.65%.

PNE face Cardiff City away from home on Wednesday night -

Preston North End will have Robbie Brady back with the squad for Wednesday night’s trip to Cardiff City.

The Lilywhites head to south Wales on the back of four consecutive draws. PNE were left frustrated, once again, to not take all three points in their previous outing at Sheffield Wednesday. North End have five games left of the calendar year, to try and pick up more wins than so far managed.

While that has been a gripe for boss Paul Heckingbottom, one positive at the moment is that his squad is in good shape. Liam Lindsay and Mads Frokjaer were back in the match day squad at Hillsborough, and Brady - who has been out since late October - now looks set to add to that.

“Same available and Robbie has added to that now as well,” said Heckingbottom, in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday afternoon. “So yeah, we are taking a big squad down there. Especially when you are playing Wednesday night and early Saturday, it is good. And, the first time while I have been here, where I’ve felt we’ve got that whole squad available, virtually.”

“WE ARE READY TO GO.”

"We’ve trained through the week, we’re organised and ready to go."

"Preston might not have won for ten games, but their last few results have been quite good.”

"They work hard, they’re an aggressive side out of possession, they’ll come out, they’ll come after us and they’ll make it hard for us. “

"They’ve got their way of doing things; obviously we’ve studied that and hopefully we’ll find ways to counteract it."

“I think it always helps not to have a congested schedule.”

“It would have been Saturday to Wednesday, so we would have had less preparation time, less rest and a bit more tiredness. They [Preston] have played on Saturday, so it leads us into a strong game."

Controlled start from Cardiff without much killer instinct in the final third at the moment.

We should be 1-0 down already! Bad miss from Preston. We re still persevering with Del Boy (Trotter) Robinson upfront. Lost the ball 2 or 3 times already and no attempt/challenge to get it back.

It's terrible, no end product. Passing the ball about continually in their own half. Nobody is trying to take on the defence, they stop and pass it back. I wonder why the stadium is empty. Shocking football
