" Ryotaro Tsunoda "

Sat Jan 04, 2025 11:47 am

Cardiff City will allow Ryotaro Tsunoda to leave on loan and return to his former club KV Kortrijk for the rest of the season.

Tsunoda was originally signed for Cardiff, but Tans club KV Kortrijk have been involved in a relegation battle year after year and he was sent there last season, then again this season, got injured and City got him fit again.

Bluebirds boss Omer Riza previously stated that they were looking to send the Japanese centre-back out on loan again in the new year, with the 25-year-old finally having recovered from a nasty hamstring injury.

He sustained that hamstring injury while on loan at Kortrijk, Cardiff's sister club, last year, having signed for the Welsh club a year ago before the immediate move to Belgium.

Tsunoda, who is left footed and can play at centre-back, in a back three or at left-back, has made a comeback in recent weeks and has turned out a couple of times for Cardiff's under-21s in a bid to regain his match fitness.

It is understood there are still some admin details to iron out and sign off, with Tsunoda's deal likely to be pushed through early next week.

He’s 25, not exactly an 18 year old in need of first team experience.

What a complete waste of money.

Are we just being used as a vessel to buy players for Kortrijk?

I thought the same.

Even when he came back after last season, I never thought he'd play for us.

Send him to Cheltenham. He'll come back like Paulo Maldini

We’ve paid all the medical bills and accommodation etc

Tans just used us to get him back to Tans other club KV Kortrijk

It did work out the other way when we were under a transfer embargo and the Belgium club signed a player(Zohore I think)and loaned him straight to us :laughing6:

It seems strange that Tsunoda and Simic both appear to have been purchased more to benefit Kortijk than Cardiff.

You'd have thought it would be more sensible to buy players able to keep Cardiff in the Championship then buying players to keep Kortijk in their league?

If Tan really is committed to getting Cardiff back into the Premier League ( which of course we all know is the usual cock and bull from The Politician) then he's going about it in a very strange way.

Are FFP rules in Belgium such that the only way he can get players for Kortwijk is to use funds that are desperately needed at Cardiff to buy players to send on loan to Belgium? No doubt we'll get the usual excuse that we couldn't sign any players in the window because we were close to the FFP limits.

Who knows what goes on in Tan's head?

he is a very good footballer mind, I've been full game highlights of him and probably can do a job for us in defence. shame he got injured.

Maybe at U21 level or in Belgium, but not been proven he's anywhere good enough for the Championship.

Remember that Kanga scored 12 goals against defenders in that league last season.

I remember people saying we shouldn't loan out Eli King because he was ready - he can't even get a game at Stevenage.

He was very good when he played for the u21 against Ipswich recently, he played at left-back, and you could see that he is a good footballer,He could get into the majority of lower championship or top league one team.

Kieron Evans looked good at U21 level and so did Eli King.

Both are struggling below the Championship so I don't think U21 performances are necessarily a great indicator.

He is over 21, and the reason he was playing was to give him some game time, or are you saying that a player who plays for the
u21 team to get fit is not a championship player, if you had watched the game you would have seen that he was above u21 standard. Mannie Barton who is 17 years old and plays for the u21 team and is a pretty regular scorer is capable of making the grade up to the championship team. The two players you mentioned might not be up to the mark as you suggest but you cannot compare them to every u21 player in the u21 team.
Ok they lost today 5-1, but if you look at the team chosen, some have only just left school, I think the regulars must have been left out so they could be in the squad on Thursday

I was just making the point that U21 football is not always the best indicator of whether a player can do it in the Championship.

Of course some will but the vast majority won't, that's at all clubs and not just our's.

Tsunoda hasn't even been tested at Championship level. Impossible to say he would be good at that level based on a few academy games or on playing in a poor Belgian team.
