Michael Carrick says it wasn't to be for his team today

Sat Jan 04, 2025 6:22 pm

Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick told BBC Radio Tees Sport:

"It wasn't to be today and it should have been really, I think with the position we got ourselves in first half, we looked more dangerous without really threatening the goal enough.

"I thought we looked more dangerous and had moments around the box but final pass and a couple of offsides. I am disappointed in our performance in the second half.

"There wasn't much space but we needed to find a way and to be better.

"The hard bit is defending right and not giving any chances away… the rest of it didn't fall into place for us."

I thought they were poor yesterday.

After they took the lead they took their foot off the gas and paid for it. That Doak guy was perhaps the best player I have seen all season. He was a nightmare for our defence and made the chances for them. Fortunately for us their strike force went to sleep after their goal and as the game went on it look more unlikely they were not going to score another goal.

Lets not take anything away from our defence as they still had a job to do and did it well.

As a team we really battled well, didn't create much but didn't really look like conceding a 2nd.

I thought Boro were poor, no real punch to their attack.

A good point but we need wins.

Doak is going places for sure.

Looking at their forum, some of their fans are frustrated Carrick will stick to their passing style - no matter what the circumstances of the game are.

Unlike us, they do have the players to play the passing style but I agree with them, they probably did need to mix it up.

They think they needed to play in a more scrappy way yesterday.

Don't think he'll be there much longer.

Liverpool have turned down £15m from Crystal Palace for him, but they're expected to go in with another offer. Chances are he'll get a permanent move to another Premier League team by the end of the window.

Or a loan to another premier league club although they are happy with how he is developing at Boro.

I think the sticking point is that Liverpool want a buy back on him.

Why can't we ever seem to get this sort of player on loan?

Need to pay a loan fee and the player's wages in full to get these types of players which is something Tan won't do these days.

We were actually in for Doak in the summer but the club decided to spend the money elsewhere (on Kanga probably knowing them) - another poor decision.

We've had a few decent ones in the past to be fair. Harry Wilson, Victor Camarasa and Jaden Philogene spring to mind.

It was such a shame that we never got to see Harry Wilson in a City shirt in person.

I agree.

Paying a fee plus all wages can be cost prohibited for clubs as it can be seen as wasted resources as player goes back at end loan? Of course we know city cuts so was not a realistic option ..... say it again its not about city wanting a player it's about cost... the parent club... and the player ...all theses things need to be in agreement before it happens. ....but board have no idea that their cuts are damaging our championship future

Fair response for Carrick, fed up with all the ref missed this and missed that....Making a reputation for himself as a manager, hope he stays there for a while and builds up his experience
