Manolis Siopis leaves and sends message to Cardiff fans

Fri Jan 31, 2025 11:12 am

Manolis Siopis has completed a permanent transfer to Panathinaikos for an undisclosed fee, subject to international clearance.

The midfielder arrived in South Wales in the summer of 2023 and made 64 appearances in total for the Bluebirds.

The Greek international now returns to his home country, with Athens-based side Panathinaikos currently occupying third place in the Greek Super League.

A popular character amongst players, staff and supporters in the Welsh capital, we’d like to thank Sio for all of his efforts and wish him the very best of luck for this next step in his career.

Thank you, Sio!

Sounds like there is a fee:

He always gave his all and I wish him well. He seemed a good character, but unfortunately, he simply wasn't suited to the Championship.

He started well for us alongside a fully fit Ramsey, but when Ramsey got injured and it was up to siopis to step up, we quickly saw his limitations.

He did a lot of running, but lacked discipline, making poor decisions to charge up the pitch to press, which left us totally exposed and wide open down the middle. I was hoping with Chambers coming into midfield, that would have helped Siopis but unfortunately, his performances didn't improve. He looked totally out of his depth at Millwall with their youngster embarrassing him.

Any midfield enforcer has to win his duels. I remember Warnock bringing in Marko Grujic, who I thought was an average player at the time. However, we went on a tremendous run of results with Grujic in the team and I remember one crazy stat that he won nearly every header. I think it was something like he won 21 out of 22 headers.

Like most people, I prefer football played on the deck, but winning headers is winning duels and Grujic won the majority of his duels. Unfortunately, Siopis is small, rarely wins headers and gets physically dominated. I remember a 50/50 with Philiogene home to Hull last season with Philiogene leaving Siopis sprawled out on the deck, coming away with the ball and he should have scored. Aron Gunnarsson would never have allowed that and that was one of several reasons why unfortunately Siopis struggled.

I will always think highly of Siopis because he gave his all. Unfortunately, the Championship was a little too physical for him and I'm sure he will do better in the Greek league with less intensity. I think the decision is good for Siopis, good for our club and we will hopefully both move on to successful futures.
