Cardiff City FC can confirm that Kion Etete has signed a two-year contract extension in the Welsh capital and will join Bolton Wanderers on loan for the remainder of the 2024/25 campaign.

Etete Signed by Cardiff in 2022 has made 56 appearances / just 6 goals.

Updated:

“ SO FAR 10 PLAYERS OUT / 2 PLAYERS IN “

31st Jan 2025: Kion Etete loaned to League 1 Bolton till June 2025.

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=144783

Kion put pen to paper on a deal which will see him remain in the Welsh capital until the summer of 2027 ahead of a loan switch to League One, with the Trotters currently sitting in seventh position in the third tier table.

Since arriving in South Wales back in 2022, the striker has made 63 appearances for the Bluebirds, scoring nine times.

We’d like to wish Kion the best of luck during his time at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

I'm not surprised he's signed a new contract.

Was going to be out of contract in the summer and we would have got compensation if he joined another club - but only if we offered him a new contract on the same or better terms that he was on before.

Interesting to see how he does in League One.

Ridiculous decision imo
He's old enough to have made a breakthrough by now. Not good enough for this level, if he was we wouldn't be loaning him out to a league one side. Crazy decision.

Completely disagree.

As I've said, we'd forfeit any compensation we would have received for him if we didn't offer a contract on the same terms or better than he was already on.

This way, we can sell him in the summer and at least make some money out of it. Two year contract means we'll get a better fee then if he was only on a one year contract.

Crazy decision to give him contract or to send him out on loan? Very difficult to judge him when he's been out so long with injury! Worth the risk as cost us lot more to sighn a striker in summer....

This is smart business for me. He's now a sellable asset or (hopefully) will come good.

I'd have let him go, but I'm not a CEO of a football club.

The loan move is correct. He needs minutes and goals.

All depends on whether anyone wants him. Bit of a gamble if we’re stuck with him.

That's the name of the game though, isnt it. It's a business as much of a sport.

if and it's a big if, he gets 10 goals before the end of the season, I still don't think he will be championship level, however he will be in high demand for the higher clubs in league one next season so we may then get a few nob for him. I hope he does well.

Am I the only one who thinks a run of games at a good League 1 club with more chances created, could see Etete score frequently at that level?

I think there's ability there and we've all seen what Mark Harris did for Oxford at that level.

A successful loan will give us the option of either cashing in, or seeing if he can kick on at Championship level for us. I'm pleased we've extended his contract.

I think it's a good decision.

I think he will do well in L1, we can cash in come the summer.

League 1 Etete will do well , Not a Championship Striker.

This is an excellent decision and protects our investment. Kion has potential to be a decent player is still young and needs a run at league one injury free. City now can get money for him so this is far from crazy. Well done to the club

Imo he’s just no good enough and I don’t think anyone will be breaking down the door to sign him. I’d be surprised if he does well at Bolton, but hope he does.

All about opinions but I see potential in him....but you miss the actual point...he has resale value regardless so the club have protected us

I don’t miss it. There is a chance we could benefit. What if he flops at Bolton, he comes back to us on a wage, and we’re stuck with him til the next potential loan move which (if he flops at Bolton) could be a league 2 team who won’t be able to stump up much of a transfer fee.
It is opinions as you say, and I respect yours, but personally I’d let him go and save whatever wage he’s on.

I still think there is a decent player in there who definitely needs minutes and goals.. if you look at Kieffer Moore’s career at the same age you wouldn’t have thought there was a player who would end up being a top championship striker. Big strikers often take a while to develop and I am happy to take the gamble to protect an asset who’s probably not on vast wages..

I disagree I think give him a run of games and he will turn out very good ....I think we got rid of glatzel ti soon . I remember there to be a bit if a buzz around when glatzel was coming off the bench ...they both needed a good run of games (only my opinion)

Striker 56 games for us 6 goals I rest my case.

Northampton 18 appearances 3 goals League 2

Cheltenham 13 appearances 3 goals League 2

I respect all opinions.

I’m just going by record and watching him play for us.

He is obviously not a championship striker yet !!

These bigger lads take longer to get going, Chris Wood didn't get going until 24, and Kieffer a bit later.

Visually Kion looks at least 8~10Kgs lighter than Salech, i reckon Salech is closer to the target man we need than Etete. He is mobile so if he can learn to use that he wouldn't necessarily have to fill the target man criteria and a manager looking for a more of an all-rounder may come calling.

For him and us, he needs to be in the shop window and playing

Good points made.

Well known that strikers don't peak until they're 25+.

I'm not overly convinced that Etete will be a Championship striker but he needs to play games regularly to see how good he really is. He can't do that with us so this is a good loan.
