Flash of annoyance about Saturday's win

Mon Mar 17, 2025 6:37 pm

Interesting insight from Ali Maxwell on the Not The Top 20 podcast about our win on Saturday:

"These are one of those wins where you check it out, you watch the game, you look at the stats. You're impressed.

Then you get a flash of annoyance with Cardiff. There's no consistency at all. I see performances like this and think why can't you do this more often?

I know the reality is they won't follow up this performance."

I've used the word frustrating many times to describe city's performances and that is about right! We keep scoring and play well.... against Sunderland Burnley could easily got a result especially Burnley .... 2-1 seems to be the score with us lately .... so near yet so far in many games

Been a few games this season Plymouth Swansea at home for example where I've thought why can't we play like this on a consistent basis,

it shows we have the players to turn in top performances so the question has to be why are they so few and far between

I have my own opinion why but we all know what that is

Nail on head.

think we all know the reasons not a consistant side tinker tinker every game we go to defensive for alot of games to try to hang on to what we have which is usually a point at best end up losing manager whose trying to break his teeth learning on the job so to speak not working very well my accessment of the season so far

Riza said after the Luton horror show that he would tell the players he'll be making changes for the Blackburn game. I thought that was priceless as he's being doing just that every game since he got the job.

We DO have enough quality players not to be in the mess we currently find ourselves in but for the reason of our lack of consistency look no further than our chopn'change manager. Absolutely ridiculous.

Yep. Consistency has been non existent. They are perfectly capable. Not sure if it's attitude. Fitness. Tinkering. But it's really annoying

It all sadly goes back to 1 main thing…

Riza’s lack of game management and experience

We either go ahead and instead of killing the game off he panics and decides to ‘hang on”. This inevitably results in us soaking up wave after wave of pressure before eventually conceding.
If on the other hand we concede early, he leaves it too late to make changes and freshen things up. Inexcusable really as our squad depth is the best it’s been for years. We now have pace and quality out wide, a striker or 2 who knows where the net is, at least 3 or 4 quality midfielders and an improving defence, albeit prone to going asleep on occasion. The defensive problems aren’t helped by the tinkering. That can’t help consistency. Everyone seems to rave about him but I still think Goutas is our “Grobbelar”. I’d rather Fish + 1 (Lawlor or Daland).

1 positive of late though… we don’t seem to be playing as much of the tippy tappy sideways and backwards stuff. Not as much anyway. However Horvath and Alnwick’s antics with the ball at their feet will be the end of me.

I think I was the only one saying we would come away with a result at Blackburn. I said that as Blackburn have been awful of late, everyone one and their dog have beaten them. For your Blackburn fan our win against them was the final nail in the coffin.

Sheff Wed next up lets see what happens there. They will be a sterner test.

All good points being made

The frustrating thing for me is we have some very good players in this squad who seem to do 90% of things well then just make poor decisions/passes/mistakes when the pressure is on

This team should be comfortable mid table but for whatever reason it’s not!!
