Best TV Pundit

Mon Mar 24, 2025 11:20 pm

Roy Keane has been named as the Best Pundit at the British Sports Journalism Awards.

Who do you think is the best TV pundit?

Keane is right up there for me, always speaks his mind.

Would also say Joe Hart is good, gives a different view of the game. Ian Wright and Alan Shearer have always been decent.

Keane for me. He speaks his mind and has a great dry sense of humour.
I like Neville also.
Can’t stand Carragher and his biased views and whinny voice. Should never be working after that incident.

The guy I really dislike is co-commentator Ally McCoist.
His constant chatter is mind numbing, he doesn’t shut up for a minute!
Earnshaw is almost as bad!

Agree 100% with all of that - if McCoist is commentating I generally don't watch the match.

I can put up with Ally, it's Robbie Savage that does my head in

Pundit wise I do like Danny Murphy,
Commentator wise I'd say Darren Fletcher

Horses for courses!

I love Ally. His insight on a strikers technique is quality.

I can't stand Danny Murphy :laughing6:

Darren Bent is quality for me, also.

Keane is the best, though.

I agree that Keane is watchable because he has that dark presence about him but as for enlightening the viewer with respect to the game being played, forget it. His repetitive use of the word 'quality' is laughable and just a fallback for him when he has nothing else to contribute.

Nearly all match commentators nowadays try too hard to be funny and seek every opportunity to drop in what they perceive as a witticism, which it is not. And as for the ridiculous facts they dredge up to pad out their commentary. Grrrrr !

Funnily enough, I also quite like Ally. Once you get attuned to his accent, he can be quite entertaining.

I personally love the banter between Roy Keane and Jill Scott.

I agree totally with your Keane, Neville, carragher and Earnshaw comments but for me Ally McCoist is the best co-commentator on tv. All the others want to constantly criticise everything but Ally is different, he praises and encourages players and can be humorous too.

Sorry but Earnie is the only commentator I actually mute the tv for. :laughing6:
Just does not shut up. It’s like he’s desperately trying to prove his knowledge of the game.
Does my head in.

Robbie Savage is without doubt the worst pundit of all. Every time he says something he follows it up with “yer know”. Awful. MCoist is very good.

If we're talking about the worst I'd throw in the Liverpool pundits, especially McManaman and Carragher.

When commentating on Liverpool games they seem to call all the players by their first name like Mo, Trent etc.

It's like when I hear our fans talk about our players like Dimi, Robbo, Sio (before he left) etc.

But maybe I'm just old fashioned

Love it when calls his sidekick fletch! He's entertaining but informative although does rabbit on but better than boring women co commentators or earnie carrhagar Neville .....

Keane is good as he talks about the emotion or commitment, the rest just repeat cliches.

The only pundit who informed me what was happening tactically during the game was (sorry) Emma Hayes a few years back.

I think there are too many pundits as the satellite companies have to fill hours of waffle. Does anyone actually listen to most of them?

Earnie is the most annoying though and that hurts.

There's definitely too much air time for them to fill.

Watched a game on Sky the other Sunday and watched about ten minutes of the post game chat. Then turned the TV off to go and make some food and ring someone. Came back to the TV a couple of hours later and they were still talking

Can't believe many people were still watching the pundits for two hours after a standard Premier League game.

Danny gabbidon is very good

What do you want from a summeriser / pundit?

What value do they add?

For me they they fall into 2 categories

1) The expert- someone who can point to what is happening tactically in real time and the opposition's counter. They are rare as fcuk and probably coaches. I reckon someone like Riza, well-versed in the game could tell you what's happening and what the coaches did to stop it (or not)

2) The legend - Someone who comments at a top level on the game from their clubs point of view and may give you some insight into the fans and clubs mentality or thinking. Shearer Newcastle, Keane United, Wright Arsenal.

Other than that, they are a waste of time. Ledley and Ash were terrible yesterday, said less than Dai the drunk down the crown as Allen and Bellers are still their mates, and whoever the summeriser during the game was is even worse as she thought Dan James was prime Ronaldo.

Kevin Ratcliffe ….totally underrated imo …absolutely brilliant to listen with his knowledge of the game

I like the sky set up, when it's Keane, Neville and Carragher, Bellamy is really good too when he is a pundit.

This does say TV but I'm going to say it from a commentary point of view, big fan of Sam matterface and talksport on a Saturday without Adrian Durham would never be the same. Gets me through my Saturdays in work with my headphones on! :)

Keane...done it at the very top level and speaks honestly, no matter who the team is!

After watching the Bournemouth v Man city cup match on the weekend, the ex Bournemouth lad Steve Fletcher, who was intervieved prior to kick off, came across as so intelligent and articulate, I reckon he would be perfect as a tv football pundit.
