Riza: I don't know why we let them have the ball

Sat Mar 29, 2025 6:17 pm

"We allowed them to have a lot more of the ball. The reason why, I don't know."

Omer Riza:

"First half I thought we played well. The first 10 minutes it was cagey, but after that we were dominant, created opportunities, scored a goal and had a couple more opportunities as well. It was a very good first half.

"The front four were energetic, caused problems and we had good stability behind the ball. We were hoping for more in the second half. But it just seems to be an element of a mental thing with the boys. They didn’t apply enough pressure in the second half. They sat and allowed them to have a bit more time in the midfield areas, which put us on the back foot, which was disappointing.

"Conceding from a set play, when we had worked on it this week, knowing how they work, was disappointing.

"There were some forced changes with Perry Ng coming off with cramp and having no natural right-back. We had to move players around to remain attacking and also bring attacking players on to the pitch to win the game, but we were unable to do it. A frustrating one overall.

"It's just one of those moments we are going through where it just changed second half. We didn't tell them to sit back and protect the lead. It was about going to get another goal.

"If we had done that in the first half, it might have eased the pressure. We didn’t manage to do that. It didn’t happen and we’ve come away with a point.

"We allowed them to have a lot more of the ball. The reason why, I don't know. We came off the levels and intensity and we didn't step through enough.

"It's those moments in games, our players feel, maybe it's a subconscious thing, they know how important the three points are and it's a natural thing we are doing.

"We have come away with a point and we have to move forward now into next week with QPR.

"Charles coming on second half caused us more issues. Dealing with two and not just (Barry) Bannan, and we didn't really get to grips with it well enough.

"We've spoken about it [mentality] a lot. Until you're in this position you can never understand how difficult it is for them on the pitch. You have to keep plugging away and look to QPR on the weekend.

"They are going to be frustrated and disappointed. But we have 90 minutes to get the job done and we haven’t done that. We can't find excuses, we have to find solutions.

"We finished the first half really well. When we came in at half-time, the players were in a good place and high in confidence.

"You don’t want to make changes for the sake of making changes. They made three changes and it’s helped them and we weren't able to manage it. We made our changes when we needed to. I'd have liked to have seen the game through with most of the players on the pitch, but the changes we made, we had to make them.

"But no, I don’t regret not making changes at half-time.”

Maybe not at half time but as soon as they did, we should have taken a forward off and Turnbull in midfield

Ffs one simple reason they had the ball 2nd half? They changed tactics and you didn't do anything to counteract it.. not rocket science but sorry this statement is pathetic shows you don't know what doing .... made changes when we needed to? mmmmm after they scored or was that just a coincidence?

Then you would be complaining about sitting on a lead when they score, because sure as shit they would.

It wasn't the extra bod they dropped into midfeild and pushing Bannan a bit higher, we started to cope with that. They didn't score in open play, it just wasn't as one-sided. They started to played like a team much higher than us.
It was the madness of taking Mannserk off for Turnbull and Elgharzi for Alves. Chambers huffed and puffed and if he wanted to change the midfeild to bring on the slow, ball playing Turnbull, it should have been him. Elghazi has been a disaster all season. Why should it change?

No. We’d still be playing with a forward and two wide players which we’ve done many times this season.

Frustrating and angry yet again .
The buck stops with the manager and he hasn't been good enough his record is terrible just like our league position.
First half today was good really encouraging but he just can't control his team to win a game .it was so obvious Wednesday would change it second half we wernt ready for it not good enough sorry

You can’t just stand and watch Weds start to get a hold of the game and hope for the best. You don’t have to wait until 60mins to make a sub Riza. Ffs total negligence by Riza not to react. No wonder we keep throwing points down the pan, he’s clueless.

Can’t understand why el Ghazi is in the match day squad. Each game is going to have intensity in it and unfortunately he doesn’t have any aggression in him. Yesterday it got quite feisty for a while and the referee wasn’t controlling it properly. El ghazi isn’t the one to bring on when it’s like that. He doesn’t have the bottle for it.

Barry Bannan should have been clocked by Riza and his staff , Purse too busy laughing as we edge closer to relegation so he’s a useless waste. Got to say what a player Bannan is I would love a leader like that running things on the pitch.

Well if he could see we were giving them too much time a
nd space in midfield why the hell wasn't he shouting at the players to push up and close them down to stop them.
It's a bit late questioning why they allowed them so much space during his press conference after the game ffs.
