Corners - How dull are they

Sat Mar 29, 2025 6:41 pm

When you crowd the keeper prior to a corner being taken and the ref tries to coach the game instead of reffing and warns everyone, then does it again, and we also have the championship pantomime villain in NG, why the fcuk do we still crowd the keeper, barge into him, and make it oh so simple for the ref to blow up? Just go short!!!!!

Footballers and coaches are just daft, but it sums us up, like a bunch of 6th formers

Agreed, gone are the days when were a threatening team from corners. A lot of the time the delivery is pathetic though, and couple that with the pointless fouls we give away its a non entity. The corner in which Davies put the ball in the net after the ref blew up, the foul Ashford done was just so needless.

I completely disagree with that.

When we keep playing short football, people say ‘we have a threat in Salech, ping crosses into the box’

Now when we do ping balls into the box, it’s ’play Short!!!’

Just another thing to whinge about.

I never understand the 4/5 standing on top each other? not one does anything to get ball so it goes to waste ....we are not arsenal ! Just spread 5 players around penalty spot with others in various places so spread opposition defenders out ... are we the worst corner takers in championship?

Putting players around the goalkeeper is just a stupid strategy from corners.

Nearly always the referee will give a foul.

The fact that a foul had been given from a corner in the first half should have told us to stop doing it - but we didn't.

Just to be clear, with my post:

I don’t think it’s clever crowding the keeper, but I also don’t think we should be playing short from corners

:laughing6: Nor me i go nuts when we do, it was a poor choice or words, but we needed to change the routine

Short corners are terrible but these days whenever you crowd the keeper at a corner the ref will blow for a free kick 9 times out of ten as its easier than trying to figure out who pulled or pushed who in a crowd of ten players, out swingers to the penalty spot seems the safest option these days

To think last season - We were up there with the best from goals scored from corners/set pieces
Where has it gone wrong this season ??? Do we practice these in training ??? :o

I couldn't believe what I was seeing with our corners, we were asking for the ref to blow up for a foul everytime, with our crowding the keeper in on his line antics.

SW showed us how it was done with their corner with a bit of innovation, while we just looked like a bunch of clowns in both boxes with them.

It was a complete shitshow, it's like we want to make things difficult for ourselves.

Like they do in American Football we should have a Special Teams Coach whose area of expertise is solely corners and free kicks.

We need two Micky Droy (Chelsea years ago) type players and someone who can accurately cross the ball with pin point accuracy.

If the cross is good every corner should result in a shot, or header, on target. Same for Free Kicks - Presently we are just hit and hope.

Same for Throw Ins. We should have an Andy Legg type throw in expert.

Every Corner, Free Kick or Throw In should be an opportunity for an attack on goal.

More attacks on Goal = More Goals.

Good point about Ralls - But is he the only player who can take a corner in this squad ???
If the Club know he is not playing - then someone else should be on duty in training and in the game .
Just the same if our penalty taker is out - someone else should be practising any of the above in training
