" Relegated to the Championship "

Sun Apr 06, 2025 3:00 pm

Southampton have been relegated to the Championship after one season in the Premier League. They are the first team in the top four divisions to have promotion or relegation confirmed.

The Saints currently sit on ten points with seven games to go. Wolves, in 17th, are now 22 points clear of them.

They need one more point to equal Derby County's record of the lowest ever Premier League points total.

Leicester and Ipswich are likely to join them in the Championship next season.

Leicester are 15 points from safety and Ipswich now trail Wolves by 12 points, after losing at home to the Midlands club on Saturday.

The premier league is a total monopoly. Pity we are very unlikely to be playing Saints next year. Always good games against them where we often get a result.

Despite city's failings I'm premier league not sure you will find city in any worse category of the league? What is worrying and i started to highlight it several seasons ago is the promoted teams that do get relegated are using parachute payments to keep their squads intact so to go up straight away so acquiring more moneyin process...... past two seasons 2 relegated teams have been promoted 1st time this never happened previously in championship......and pundits are forecasting Ipswich and Leicester to do same even before relegated! Give it couple more seasons and it will be a lockout in championship top 6 with parachute payment clubs filling most if not all places .....

The premier league hasn't got any better, I just feel Covid and reckless spending has ruined the championship.

You cannot out Citeh Citeh with a Btec version of it, you need something different, but every new coach only wants to do that.

The lack of originality and thinking is poor. Nearly every team is 4231, even dopey teams like ours, who can barely pass the ball quickly or accurately enough.

It also doesn't help that premier league teams are allowed to sign almost unlimited players, hoard them, then send them out on loan at the last moment so you can't plan the season. They also steal all your youth and apprentice talent for peanuts when the kids should be breaking through at lower levels and allowing clubs to develop their talent.

Can't see this season promoted teams troubling either Sheffield and Burnley play an attritional game without any real talent, and Leeds will be too open if they even get there. But Bristol, Coventry and even Millwall are in the playoff picture shows how poor this season is. They are average at best

The inevitable has been confirmed.

Southampton's 3-1 defeat at Tottenham guaranteed what everyone had known for a long time now - they will be playing Championship football next season.

Ivan Juric's men have become the first Premier League team to be relegated with as many as seven matches still to play.

And they still need two more points to avoid taking the tag of being the worst Premier League team in history from Derby County's class of 2007-08.

With fourth-bottom Wolves 12 points clear, Saints are almost certain to be joined in the second tier by Leicester and Ipswich, with the trio needing another 19 points to avoid becoming the worst bottom three ever in the Premier League.

Nothing else is certain, not least the future of manager Juric whose 18-month contract is believed to contain a break clause.
