Cardiff Rugby set for administration and Welsh Rugby Union takeover

Cardiff Rugby have confirmed their intention to enter administration and will be taken over by the Welsh Rugby Union in another dramatic development in Wales’ national game.

As revealed by Mail Sport, the capital club’s players and staff were called to an emergency meeting at Cardiff Arms Park on Tuesday afternoon to be told the news their employer has served a notice of intent to appoint an administrator.

The WRU is set to step in the coming days to ensure Cardiff does not fall out of existence as English Premiership sides Worcester, Wasps and London Irish did in the 2022-23 season.

I read something on Twitter (X), that apparently all four regions will be doing this as a way of purging any debts. All part of this all Wales plan the WRU have drafted. Doesn't sound completely legal if true mind

Is strange as they were taken over just a year ago how can this happen so soon after? Of all the regions two probably won't be allowed to dissappear Cardiff and scarlets
.. maybe it's a ruse to reduce regions to 3 as WRU want.

A lot of rugby clubs struggling still after Covid.

My local team Worcester Warriors had no chance of surviving after that.

Thankfully it looks like Worcester will finally be back in the Championship next season, good luck to them.

Rugby is a tricky one, it's obviously not a dying sport.( Although creating the regions kind of killed abit of it) But there's not much appeal. Especially in Wales.
What I mean is other than the international games there isn't much of an appeal. I bet you 85-90% of home fans in any given home 6 nations game couldnt tell you who any of the players play for club wise, or who they are even, and and with most of the 85-90% haven't even been to a club game. ( not saying people have to - but just look at the difference in that compared to an average fan in any of the stands in CCS watching a Wales game. And why's that? Because footballs structure has alot more appeal)

The league is dire, the cups are dier.
It just all needs a big big shake up.
Yes, for alot of other nations it's different, ie your Frances, Irelands, Australias etc (even though France and Ireland are in the same comps as the regions)
But still - for the home nations along with France and Italy - club/regional rugby is just feeling abit stale.

I don't understand the finances in rugby compared to football, the way players move between clubs etc there never seems to be any money involved other than what the player makes. One thing I've noticed from going to watch Cardiff rugby though is that on average in the arms park they may get 6-8k. There has been a few games where tickets have been offered to various teams for kids/charities/Blue Light services at a lower cost and the crowds have gone up quite significantly. So in my head (and its probably not as straight forward as this) and Cardiff City could also potentially learn and earn from this, why not drop ticket prices more regularly? Cardiff Rugby tickets atm around £25 as a one off game. Drop that to say £15 and I'm sure more would go, I know I certainly would and take my son down more often. The £10 'saved' would end up going on the bar or food vendors or club shop anyways so in a round about way would end up in the coffers. Plus the atmosphere would be heightened due to the amount of extra fans who would potentially come back week after week or even buy a season ticket for the following year.

I'm no financial expert and maybe someone better placed may know but could this be something that works long term?

Clubs have a salary cap which puts them at massive disadvantage to English/French clubs.... Cardiff like the other regions had to play youngsters first couple of seasons probably losing fans on the way...strange thing is only been taken over last year .

Drop to two regions - Flatlanders and Valleys, under them create a club competition to feed them with the old clubs. That competition starts at the end of the football season and runs through the summer, best players enter a draft for the the two regions who play in the English premiership. Simple. Nothing ever changes though the “old school guys and committee” men will never let it happen. Welsh rugby is doomed.
