Relegation release clauses

Thu Apr 10, 2025 10:42 am

If we were to go down, do we know how many (if any) of our players have relegation release clauses in their contracts?

Our wage bill is still too high for the players that we have and hopefully we start next season with a team of young, hungry players who are only going to get better.

I think the best we can hope for is a clause that drops wages if they are relegated. I would be shocked if we had that though as that would require foresight we simply don’t seem to have.

If the club had any sense (they dont) clauses would have been included. A huge amount of budget will be saved by releasing Ramsey, Ralls, El Ghazi, Meite, Rinohmota and Collins. All out of contract this summer. With the exception of Rinohnota we wouldn't miss any of those.

No player would sign that sort of contract if it was offered to them.

In the FAB meeting it was mentioned that some players do have relegation clauses , but additional savings would have to be made

Apparently it’s quite common to have a reduction written in. This is from Blackstones Solicitors website on foootball player contracts.

Salary and Bonuses

Your base salary is the guaranteed amount you’ll be paid by the club, usually on a weekly or monthly basis. Beyond that, many contracts include performance-related bonuses. These could be tied to individual or team achievements, such as:

Goal bonuses: Extra payments for each goal you score.
Appearance bonuses: Paid when you play a certain number of games.
Promotion or relegation clauses: A bonus for helping the club achieve promotion, or a reduction in salary if the club is relegated.

If that is the case then I'm wrong & stand corrected. Thanks for the info.

There was definitely pay cuts when we were relegated from Premier League I do remember that that was mentioned quite often

I’m also led to believe relegation clauses are in many players contracts but almost certainly not in every ones

Yeah some players wouldn’t sign that off.

I think it’s a case of whether the player is in demand or not.
