SHEFFIELD United are pressing ahead with their investigation into why Bramall Lane was overlooked as a potential World Cup venue.
Kevin McCabe, the Championship club's chairman, described himself as 'flabbergasted' when Hillsbo rough, home of their arch-rivals Sheffield Wednesday, was chosen as South Yorkshire's representative on England's 2018 shortlist and vowed to seek clarification about the reasoning behind the decision.
Although United have drawn a veil of secrecy over their efforts - they are now refusing to acknowledge a review is taking place - The Star can confirm their concerns centre on the speed with which Wednesday were granted planning permission for an ambitious redevelopment programme after announcing their candidacy.
United are believed to have embarked upon a series of expensive consulation exercises, including one to ascertain road traffic implications around the stadium, in order to satisfy the council's demands and believed they were in pole position to win the nomination after recently staging a series of international friendlies.
Privately, reservations have also been expressed about claims that Hillsborough''s close proximity to a park, which could be used to house fans should England host the tournament, helped swing the voting in their neighbour's favour.
If that was the case, some United officials ask, why were they not informed before investing substantial amounts of time and money in the process?
The sensitive nature of their claims means the Local Government Ombudsman could be asked to intervene.
Both Wednesday and United are understood to have provided assurances that no public money would be used to fund building works before being allowed to put their cases before the Football Association
WE MUST HAVE GOT A CORRUPT BOARD!!!!!
