I am a project manager where I get a bonus based on the successful delivery of said project. The bonus is basically calculated against a performance of time, cost and quality. I completely agree with this philosophy as it focuses the mind of the project manager and if you deliver all aspects you deserve your bonus. I have never managed a project where we have been late, however every project I have managed will have had money thrown at it to ensure we are on time. That money nearly always comes from the pot reserved for quality. When I compare this to the Cardiff City Stadium Project I am left mystified as to how the Project Manager of the Stadium got his full bonus. I would like to point out here any bonus I have is roughly between 10% and 20% of my annual salary not 200%. Obviously I do not know the specification the stadium manager was working under, and I guess it was a safety certificate to allow capacity games to be played there. When I read in the press we are £7 million short for fixtures and fitting to make the stadium fully operational (under soil heating), I would argue that to enable the stadium to be on time we took the quality money and therefore the project manager failed to delivery the Stadium on time at cost to the correct quality. It's still not finished. From what I have read in the press Mr Ridsdale was awarded his full bonus, I believe this not to be right and I would expect a football with love for this club (his words) he would forego the bonus to at least pay for the furnishings in his office.
