Believe me being in school all day with 30 kids in one classroom and not being "allowed" to let them go out to play as the "ice" is lethal is bloody nightmare - kids need to get out and play - even prisoners are allowed to go outside for n hour a day for exercise and freshair!
Simple answer the County ensures they have a supply of grit/salt for schools to enable the playground and paths to be safe to go to school. Next winter each school has a grit box on site to use and be replenished when need be.
This country has gone soft to the snow years ago we would be made to walk to school even if we got there an hour late and had to leave early - we attended!
As a parent them being home drives me mad the kids get bored but i just kit them up and get them out - and just tell them "watch you don't slip" - if they do fall then its tough get up rub ya bum keep going lol
And whatever you is said about taking days off in the 6 weeks holidays - it wont happen. All the lessons missed through snow/ice days will have to be made up for over the weeks.
People have the opinion that teachers got it easy working - 9-3 mon-fri and having all the holidays off - that is a myth - behind the scenes there is so much more and every week staying late for meetings and other itineries - planning - home marking - sorting special need and basic support for pupils who do not have home input - teaching is so much more than standing in a classroom teaching children!
P.S. I am not a teacher

But to be fair she has been doing a lot of her work at home, with marking work, and lesson planning. So its not as if she has done naff all. she has done her teachers job at home. So i will disagree with the post above. Yes they do have an awful lot of holidays again work is still being done in the holiday period.
I wish I was a little more intelligent because i too would become a teacher. WOULDNT YOU???
You know what its all down too tho dont you, "health and safety" and where theres a blame theres a claim, thats the culture our country is looking too.....

Also, please remember that if you sent your child to school and he'she was to fall and injure him/herself then you'd be straight around the solicitors to put in a claim. Can't blame the headteachers or the councils for keeping schools closed!

I think the point is you shouldn't get paid.

Why shouldn't I get paid? Not my fault that school is closed
