Bluebirds look to take pressure off Dave Jones
Jan 3 2011

CARDIFF CITY manager Dave Jones has survived mounting calls for his head by receiving backing from the club’s hierarchy, despite a run of just two wins in 10 games.

The Bluebirds were brushed aside 3-0 by Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Saturday, a result which saw them drop to fifth in the table.

Passing them on the way down were Swansea City, who advanced to second after a 1-0 win against Reading at the Liberty Stadium.

But, as rumours spread that the Cardiff board were to meet to discuss Jones’ future yesterday, chief executive Gethin Jenkins defended his manager, saying now was the time for perspective and for everyone at the club to “hold their nerve”.

“Why should Dave Jones’ position be under scrutiny now? It is not,” said Jenkins, who stopped short of endorsing Jones as the man to stay in charge until the end of the season.

“We are fifth in the table with a game in hand and, if we were to win that one, it would put us back in second.

“I think supporters do need to keep things in perspective at this moment in time.

“My aim now is to work with the board and with Dave to try to bring in new players during this month to strengthen.

“The aim now is just the same and that is to keep on with our aim to bring Premiership football to Cardiff City.”

Jones completed his first deal over the weekend signing frontman Jon Parkin from Preston on a two-and-a-half year deal for £100,000.

And Jenkins claimed the recent downturn in Cardiff’s fortunes had in no way increased the pressure on the manager.

“We know we are in a results business, all sport is about results and, of course, there is pressure to deliver those results,” said Jenkins.

“But that pressure is always there. It has been there since the start of the season and it remains there now just the same.

“I think it is just a case right now of everybody holding their nerve.”

Jenkins denied suggestions the board were to hold crisis meetings over Jones’ future.

Chairman Dato Chan Tien Ghee was due to fly over for the Leeds game, but Jenkins said due to the Malaysian businessman’s schedule this would probably not happen.

“TG does try to make as many games as he can, he was here on Boxing Day, but will probably not be at the Leeds game,” added Jenkins.

“There are no board meetings scheduled to be held to discuss Dave’s future at the club or any other matter come to that.”

Meanwhile, the atmosphere at Swansea City was far lighter after Darren Pratley’s 65th-minute winner sent the club to it’s highest position for 28 years.

Skipper Garry Monk urged the club’s supporters to get behind the whole team, with some still booing Pratley because of the midfielder’s decision not to extend his contract beyond the end of this season

“It’s so important that the fans get behind Darren and the whole team now,” insisted Monk.

“I just hope Darren stays here and if we’re still pushing for promotion then the claims from the club for him to stay will be stronger and we’ll give him something to think about.

“The service he’s given to the club, you can’t knock him.

“He tries his heart out and he was back to his best against Reading. It was a great finish and you could see in the celebration what the club means to him.

“The fans pay their money and can say what they want, but I don’t see the benefit of booing your own players.

YES! If we win against Leeds we go back to second - but if he wants to look at perspective how about the current run of form? 8pts from 30 available, and a trend that doesnt show any improving? Can we afford to carry on the way we are? Maybe Gethin Jenkins needs to start looking at the bigger picture? and how many games we have left this season? Do we give Jones the transfer window, only to be sacked at some point in the future? or do we bring a fresh face, fresh ideas and fresh signings in.

With the signing of an injured and overweight Jon Parkin the future is looking pretty bleek to me!

(would rather have signed Calum Davidson on a free and put a physical player in midfield who drops back to help defence - But if jones wants to keep signing strikers inc. Vaughan then what do i know :? )

Maybe he doesnt think Chopra, Bothroyd & Bellamy is enough strike force???

Sounds like something dave jones would say. To be honest gethin jenkins hasn't got a clue what to do for the best. He's never been in this situation and I think he's shit scared of dave jones reaction if he didn't back him

If we win our game in hand we go second. Well Jenkins what do you think our chances are of getting anything out of this game in hand with our present form?
