Tax man playing hardball?

Thu Jan 14, 2010 10:59 am

HMRC are playing hardball methinks since they no longer have first dibs on our dosh if we go bust. They are coming down hard on a lot of clubs so maybe it's a policy change. We need to get our house in order sharpish - by Friday as promised by the Riddler. If not then the fans must let the board know their feelings regarding Ridsdales tenure at the Helm. We will need to protest in some shape or form after the next home game has finished. i.e stay in the ground after the game has finished on Tuesday every man jack of us and call for the end of his tenure. The sooner the egm is called as well the better.

HMRC haven`t had preferential status in a liquidation or Administration since September 2003 , so its hardly a recent change in status or policy.

What they do come down on very hard is businesses (whether they are football clubs or not is irrelevant) who agree repayment plans to clear debts due and then fail to stick to those deals. To get HMRC to have withdrawn the original winding up petition must have involved some pretty strong promises and committments on the club`s part (HMRC normally only agree to defer such things to a later date until payment is received rather than withdraw altogether) and the club`s failure to stick to the agreement will therefore be looked upon very seriously indeed and will have caused a major breakdown in trust.

Since 62 is right. To break an argeement on the very first payment stinks.
There has to be concerns that the Tax issue is only the tip of the iceberg.

I was just wondering if there was some sort of change of policy regarding issuing winding up orders on clubs reneging on payment of tax deals. We are not the only club in this predicament. Clubs such as Portsmouth, Plymouth, Southend, Rochdale, Notts County, Bournemouth as well as ourselves have all recently been subject of winding up orders by HMRC. I suspect many more clubs are teetering on the edge and that we may see many more of these winding up orders.
