Sam Hammam Calls For Calm

Thu Jan 28, 2010 5:05 pm

I've just had a very lengthy telephone conversation with an emotional Sam Hammam.

Sam is out in the Lebanon at the moment. He is fully aware of the situation at the club and in particular how the fans are feeling about things. He knows the supporters have justified grievances with the current regime, and he claimed that nobody has more justified grievances with Messrs Ridsdale, Guy, Hall, Borley, etc, than he does himself, but nevertheless he has called for the fans to stay calm.

Sam told me he firmly believes that any demonstrations against the current board will be counterproductive. He described it as being a case of cutting off our nose to spite our face as there is no realistic alternative to having Peter Ridsdale as club Chairman at this current point in time.

Sam said he believes the likes of Paul Guy, Steve Borley and Alan Whiteley know plenty of things about the club's current situation that we don't, and therefore we must simply let them get on with sorting out the mess the club is in right now. He said that if we can offer no genuine answers to the problems ourselves, then he feels that demonstrations and campaigns to get Peter Rodsdale out of the club are not only futile but potentially detrimental to the team's performances on the pitch. Sam said he believes that now is not the time for such action from the fans, especially with the team playing so well and sitting fourth in the Championship table.

Sam said he believes that the persistent rumours about the Malaysians and other potential investors refusing to do business until Peter Ridsdale is gone are utter nonsense. He pointed out that, if they so desired, the Malaysians could buy the club today and get rid of Peter Ridsdale tomorrow without any problems. He also said the current board could do likewise if the rumours about them having no confidence in the Chairman were true.

Sam asked me to pass on his best wishes to the fans but he reiterated that, in his opinion, everyone must try to remain calm and let those who are currently running the club get on with the job of sorting the present mess out while we give our full backing to the players.

I've spoken to Sam on number of occasions in recent months and today was as emotional as he's been in a very long time. He clearly understands the supporters' frustrations but feels that we will potentially be doing more damage than good by rocking the boat at this present point in time. His very strong view is that unless we can present a viable alternative to Peter Ridsdale and the current board, then we must make every effort to remain composed.

surely there are members of this and the other board who are business orientated and could do the job of the board if they were ousted. i trust sam but sitting back and doing nothing is not an option.

I have posted frequently in the past week or two that I don't believe the excuse that Ridsdale's presence would block a Malaysian bid -all the have to do is make an offer, have it accepted by the neccessary majority, and then they can do what the heck they like.

I'm sick of this board and the shareholders. They have hid behind PR whilst he does their dirty work, and takes the flak. I have absolutely NO DOUBT that to a man, they all sanctioned the ST promise, with the full knowledge it was almost certainly an empty one.

We can stay calm, or go ballistic. It isn't going to change the fact that SCUM run and own our club.

[ps, Is the Academy fund still 'ring-fenced' ?

Of course Sam wants everything to remain calm, he has a vested interest. If it all goes tits up and we go into admin, the Malaysians will step in buy us for a song and Sam (Langstone  ) loses out big time. The only real winners will be PMG (who are preferential creditors) and the Malaysians ;)

Do you honestly believe it would be as simple as that?

You said if we go into admin, the Malaysians will buy the club for a song and Langston will lose out big time.

I don't believe it would be anywhere near as simple as that.

The only thing that would soften the blow of admin for me, would be to see the parasites in the boardroom past and present losing loads of money.

I am sure you will come back with some smarmy fecking answer but thats my last word on the subject like it or lump it.

Response to your usual internet style, possibly?

Hammam believes Malaysians can simply wave a magic wand and remove Ridsdale, after all things are really that incredibly easy. Of course, Hammam ignores the fact that maybe it's not that easy and the Malaysians don't want to have to go through all the effort.

Who knows?

If the Malysians become the club's major shareholders, then I have no doubt they could choose their own Chairman/Chief Executive. Do you believe it would be otherwise?

This has nothing to do with who runs the club. It's about how much can the Scumteam can get for their shares. I don't doubt someone would buy them out at a very small price, which would mean little or no profit for the shareholders. They won't go for that, and I think would rather see the club go to the brink, and possibly further.

Oh yes, they will also make sure they can screw out as much from the club as they can in the meanwhile - it's what they've been doing all along, anyway.

Thanks for that Dave. Sam is probably right and we should be calm, but I and hundreds, if not thousands of other City fans are totally fuming right now and a demo will probably happen this saturday as feelings are running high. Got to be honest, if I was in a room will Ridsdale I would find it hard not to chin the b*stard.

I fully understand and share the feelings of frustration and so, it seems, does Sam.

However, in my opinion we have to take a deep breath and think clearly about what we are trying to achieve with any demonstrations and public shows of anger.

In recent days we've heard or read pleas for calm from characters as diverse as Steve Borley, Sam Hammam and Dato Chan Tien Ghee. That should tell us something.

We already know that most of not all of the current board will pack up and leave when they find a buyer for the club, but that's proving a lot easier said than done. Therefore, I don't personally believe that a demonstration will have any sort of a positive effect. If anything, I believe it could prove counter-productive.

Like the rest of us, you can listen to whoever you want and do whatever you want to do. But the big questions are:

1) What are you proposing to do about the current situation?

2) What do you hope to achieve by your actions?

I understand thhe frustrations, but what are you hoping that protest will achieve, Jinks?

If the option was there, I'm pretty sure almost all, if not all of the current board would step down tomorrow. However, that option doesn't seem to be there at present. Somebody has to run the club and there doesn't appear to be a queue of investors waiting to step in at this exact moment in time. Therefore, I can't see what a demonstration will achieve.

Most of us want the current board out and it seems that most of the current board also want out. They'd sell their shares right now if they could, but until someone with the necessary money steps in, then they are going nowhere. I wish I could see an alternative to the current set-up, but the fact is I can't.
