A forum for all things Cardiff City

Because of Our History of big crowds in the 50's and 60's, even though I was the only Cardiff fan in my class, everyone was Leeds/Liverpool in them days, every time we had a big game in the 70's or 80's we did get full houses once a season lol.
But I Believed we were a sleeping Giant and really believed we had the potential to be a Leeds/Liverpool/Man Utd with Crowds.
I am not so sure anymore, Any Opinions on it ?

Yes, we have the potential, but we need to get top flight football first.
If we ever get to the premiership, we will be selling out most weeks. The fans in South Wales are pretty fickle though, if we go down and stay down, they will soon desert the place. But if we manage to do a West Brom and bounce up and down, I think the majority will stick around.
Things take time, we won't turn into a Liverpool overnight, but look how far we have come since the 1980's

i believe we have the potential, but we must get to the premiership first.
if we get this investment and make it to the premiership i believe we will stay in the premiership.
the fan base will grow and we will in time become a very big club with a huge following.
thats my dream, and my belief anyway.

i think we are like sunderland or middlesbourgh when they were at there old grounds the crowds werent great but they moved to the new stadiums and got promotion pretty quick to the prem and there crowds trebled sunderland will get 45-48,000 in prem but then diped to 20,000 in the champion ship ,we could get big crowds in the prem if we went up ithink

i think the FA Cup Final showed the potentail for a large fan base we have, we sold out and could have sold more.

I'm not so sure either. We used to get pretty good crowds in the late 60's/early 70's. I've stood in a 55,000 for an Arsenal cup tie (couldn't see a thing mind) and I really thought if we got established back in the Second Division (Championship) that we'd start pulling big crowds again. In fact, I told Sam that and have always felt a bit guilty that it didn't happen. Maybe if the people of Cardiff had come flocking back, we'd be in better shape off the field now.
I definitely think that if we could have continued playing in Europe that would have helped us sustain big crowds. Those European nights were very special occasions and we nearly always punched above our weight.
In recent seasons we've picked up a fair few extra fans due to the Cup Final and the new stadium factor but I'm beginning to accept that we're never likely to be as big a club as I thought we were. Part of me has always felt that the Second Division is City's natural place in the pecking order, probably because we had 18 (?) successive seasons there in my formative years as a City fan.
When I look at the state of the game now with it's nancy boy, greedy, "celebrity" players, lack of proper tackling, sterile stadia, too much football on the telly and an uncompetitive top league, I'm grateful that I can remember much better days on the old Grange End.

I think if all parks football moved to a Sunday I think that we'd get better crowds
Also a manager that could connect with the fans better may also help (for the record I think dave jones is doing a very good job ).

we were always a selling club tho and if we kept hold of Toshack and got promoted then who knows , but the fact we didnt our form dropped and we settled lower and lower down the division before relegation in '75 . As for sleeping giants then back in the early to mid eighties Im sure the likes of Leeds , Chelsea and Newcastle were only getting between 7,000 and 15,000 crowds in what was the old 2nd Div !

Dreamlike or Chic, your comments are spot on.I once thought we were a sleeping giant but the cup final in all honesty shattered that myth.I would have thought that a cup final ticket would be like gold dust with half the nation wanting one, but in truth anyone who wanted one seemed to get one quite easy. Passion is still there with a hardcore of fans at games but there seems to be a growing amount of support where the result does'nt really bother them.Grounds & crowds have lost their own personal identity, the KC stadium, Walkers, Majdeski etc could well be our stadium. There was a time when singing came from ends where the teams mob congregated, now it's a sing song for all.Unfortunately football is a sanitised version of the one a lot of us grew up on.Without living in the past or looking through rose tinted glasses, i miss the way it used to be.

I believe the club has the potential to be huge. The club is useless at promotion though and doesn't help itself. In town you see Blues posters, listen to the radio and there is adverts for them. If they put posters up all over south wales promoting the season ticket deal and the big games, we'd be getting bigger crowds.

But why can,t we be as big as chelsea etc

Although I'm not sure that we could break into the "Big Four" I'm 100% certain that we would fill the CC Stadium every week. You only have to look at Stoke who when they were in the Championship were averaging less than us (until their promotion season) and now they are fill to capacity (27,000ish) just about every game. Ah those were the days "my my my Deliliah" up your was the reply from a Gerome brace and a header from Purse quitened them up before they scored just before half time and resorted to "we're going to win 4-3" lol - they didn't but this season they would probably have done.
Incidentally I was at the Arsenal game in 1953 when almost 58,000 watched a goal less draw so as you can imagine I've suffered over the years but tbh i don't take much notice of the boardroom stuff we've always had problems behind the scenes and unfortunately no real big money investors have ever shown a real interest in the City.
At present I think that with all the money floating around in the Premiership and the major parachute money available to sides relegated to the Championship we are doing fine I mean there aren't any sides above us that were in the Championship last season. So whilst I don't beleive we can make automatics (wer'e bound to get more injuries to key players) the play offs are still a realistic aim.
It would be great to get at least a draw this evening and a win Tuesday before Chelsea .
Keep the faith always support the boys

we are a bristol city , qpr , etc
clubs like derby and forest are football towns
we are not
IF we went up and stayed up for ten years we would build a support base
but the sad thing is, even then...with our home town club in the top flight ..there would still be thousands of liverpool and man united fans in south wales
it aint ever going to chnage
the welsh like the big events .....notice the scramble for the fa cup games etc
the thing that summed it up for me was the last game of the season during the fa cup final year
our last game at home...the place should hav ebeen rammed with people cheering on the team for their efforts in getting this club on the map and to wembley
the crowd ?
15000 !!!
simply not good enough and if that was derby or another football town , they would have sold every seat in the house
we all love cardiff...but sadly there just isnt enough of us with the same feelings
