THE RUGBY IS NOW SUFFERING AS WELL

Fri Dec 04, 2009 2:26 pm

The Eggs dont like playing in Our Stadium , there fans hate it and the crowds are not good, with the rent to us, plus 25% of all the over heads of the stadium and on their match days, they pay all the overheads, they are loosing money like a gravy train. Every game this year they have given out at least 3,000 Free Tickets per game for Adults lol, one game they gave 5,000 Adult tickets Free.
They want to go back to their home badly.

I could never understand their logic of moving all their games to our stadium. The logical thing to do would have been play all their magners games at the arms park and pick out 5 or 6 games which would have big crowed's and play them at the city stadium. This would have eased the old gin swilling members into the new stadium,Kept a link with their old ground and the new stadium factor along with big games would have ensured decent 20,000 plus gates at the city stadium.Typical of the people who run rugby to try and run before they can walk, seen it with the shambles they made of going professional.

at club level it appears to have lost its identity. I think the regional franchise is not favoured throughout.

The 2% maintenance is over the whole season, not sure match day goes to 100% - they apparently keep 100% of food sales.

But, yeah, they are losing money hand over fist. They lost 500k last season, in a successful season, rent has now gone up from 150k to 650k.

And that's not counting the Australia game - opted not to use one of the bought designated match days, so up to us to set the fee we asked. It was anywhere between 100 and 130k.

Attendance wise, Annis, like us, they count ST holders as attending. Some guys on a rugby board opposed to the move used a freedom of information request to get the actual attendance figures from the council safety group. There's about a 25% markup between announced attendance and actual attendance.

Not an exclusive, that claim was made a while ago to justify the move. Not doubting it's happening, but the timing of it being announced previously was very curious.

Interestingly enough, didn't Mr Borley say Ninian had concrete cancer also?

That stat ref the freedom of information act was proven to be aload of bullshite  freedom of information act has nothing to do with Cardiff blues attendances.

It would seem very naive of City fans to want to see the rugby go given the last few weeks of announcenments given Citys financial stading could they afford to lose the additional income gained from the blues??

Was it actually proven to be bullshite? There's zero doubt there is a big difference between announced and actual attendances for the Blues, with the number of free tickets they give out, there's little reason to doubt those figures are incorrect? Certainly a FOI request can be made to obtain the figures from the safety group, given council involvement.

It;s not a case of wanting the rugby gone - more pointing out what a good deal we got out of it, despite claims the eggers controlled everything, etc. The fact remains, the Blues cannot sustain the level they are at with the increased expenditure and decreased income by being at CCS. I'd be very surprised if they weren't facing going under over the next few years. And to be honest, quite happy, because for all the media fellating the Blues, Cardiff RFC are the ones who have been totally shafted - best players taken by Blues, history taken by Blues, facing losing their home.

Re: THE RUGBY IS NOW SUFFERING AS WELL

As far as I'm aware the attendances were similar to the way the season tickets work, as the club were giving away free tickets they accounted for them in the attendance, even if nobody turned up

Like with us if nobody went to the game the attendance would still be 16k or whatever it is, with the blues it was the ST's + the freebie tickets in circulation.

As for the fans/club I don't think things are as negative as people are making out. Obviously there is a hardcore of blues supporters who are against moving out of the city center as it was a great location but there are plenty of others that are happy with it all. I don't know a great deal about the financial side of it from the Blues perspective, but I know most seem to be happy with the move, Norster included!

Cheers I meant 25% over the whole season, but on match days they pay for everything. Thanks for the extra info.

Not quite.

It's all quite clever.

The Athletics club own Arms Park and Cardiff RFC, who I believe own most of the Blues. It's a complex arrangement I don't quite grasp, makes our club look organised.

Blues, when formed, took CRFC's players, history etc as regions were forced upon people. Cardiff RFC, despite being the nominal "owners" of Blues very much the reserve side.

Now, the Arms Park is valuable city centre land. To get that land, Council need to either apply a compulsory purchase order, iirc, or buy it from Athletics club - shareholders (members) in Athletics club getting cash.

However, that leaves Blues and CRFC homeless.

So, what has happened?

Blues move in with us - council insistent. Check.
Leckwith Stadium, needing a large amount of work, Athletics club get brand new stadium at no cost to them. Check.

Leaving only Cardiff RFC playing at the Arms Park. With crowds of around 1k, well, it;'s a shame isn't it, playing at such an overwhelmingly empty stadium, eh? Means it'll fall into disrepair, and now concrete cancer has been found.

Nice if a council could obtain that land, eh? Athletic club make nice packet on car parking, council talking about making Westgate Street pedestrianised...

Now, CL, Europa cup finals need certainly facilities, such as conferencing ones. Which Cardiff lacks. If only the council could be instrumental in creating a scenario where a nice bit of city centre land becomes available to flog to developers to make such facilities, oh, and also enable the Mill Stad to be fully finished due to the Arms Park stand backing onto the stadium, creating a kink in one end.

Meanwhile, CRFC will then be shunted to far smaller ground to be built at Sophia Gardens.

That's kinda the plan as I understand it.

Can Blues return to Arms Park? Sure. They can leave CCS. Would there be intensive political pressure, not to mention Peter Thomas, on them not to? Sure.

The word with regard to the Arms Park from my mate in the know...

Whoever posted further up about the state on the North Stand is bang on the money - the WRU are cacking it - its in a terrible shape, not so much on the Arms Park side, but the Millenium side is the problem, but they cant take the one down without the other

Cardiff RFC wouldnt be left homeless, theyve been offered a new ground, as close to the city centre as possible (im told the site is a major stumbling block), and they'd get a few quid for agreeing to relocate - the advantage in getting them to move being the Athletic Club would have no tenants, make them more open to selling.

The stadium management are keen to attract the bigger events, but there are minimum hospitality requirements for the big finals - The one end of the Millenium would be completed, The Arms Park pulled down, and a multi purpose conference/entertainment facility put in its place, due to their concerns about it not being used, it would be used to attract the level of entertainment events that could have gone to somewhere like Newport Leisure Centre (which has become less popular as a venue than it was in say the early 90s for example), but where the acts are too big for it - music fans will know that a lot of tours often miss Cardiff out due to the lack of a venue thats bigger than the CIA, but too small for a half full Millenium Stadium for example - concert promoters have already been spoken to, and have shown their support for any new venue built if its in a capacity range of around the 10000-12000 mark in a concert setup

How much of this will actually end up coming to fruitition, who knows?
