We get £400k ground rent

Thu Mar 04, 2010 2:51 pm

Just read in the western mail today that we get £400k a year in rent from the Cardiff Blues but the Blues make £600k from car parking at the Arms Park ground a year. Surely this cant be right, can it? :ayatollah:

Would it surprise you to guess the WM got facts wrong? The figure isn't in the recorded accounts because the rental agreement doesn't kick in till this financial year about the end, so it's guesswork by the WM.

The rent is 600-650k. For 18 designated match days. Adding in additional costs, ie stewarding, maintenance costs etc, it's probably pushing that figure towards the 850-900k mark.

Blues chose not to use a DMD for the Australia game - claiming they'd sell the ground out, we were able to charge high rent for that one off game. Factor in abysmal attendance, high rent and the fee to the Aussie board to play the game... I'd highly doubt they made anything of note off that lucrative game.

Thought the figures didnt look right. The Blues would be better off moving back to their old ground with poor crowds. They have lost a lot of support moving to the CCS. They may have budgeted for larger crowds, thinking their fans would have been impressed with the CCS, but this hasnt been the case. :D

Hmm, Blues didn't move for such reasons.

Let's just say Peter Thomas hasn';t invested in the Blues in years. Let's just say he's owed money, millions, by Cardiff RFC Ltd. Let's just say he's getting old now, 70, isn't it? Would like that money before he pegs it.

Let's just say there's a nice piece of prime land right next to the MS - don't know who plays there tho. Wouldn't it be nice for Thomas for a scenario to occur where the Arms Park has a single team playing there, with crowds of 1k, which are unsustainable? And concrete cancer be found.... might be good for the future to sell that prime land, eh? If only there was a council who wouldn't mind buying it - oh, happy! PT could get his money back by forcing the sale of land he doesn't actually own, WRU could finish their stadium, everyone's a winner! Ok, Cardiff RFC Ltd make money through their car park, but wouldn't it be a blow if the council had any plans to make the street a one way street, minimising custom...

Yes agree with you. Thats what is happening. They are going to extend the Millenium Stadium at the one end, but that land was given away many years ago in his will and the person stated that it can only be used for a sports ground or stadium, so would find it hard for the council to have a say really. But no doubt they will find a way around it for money!!!!

The ruggah lot pay City £65,000 per game x 18 games per season = £1,170,000

Over the 20 year lease that works out at £23,400,000

StT.

From memory of discussion with some very clued up eggers, the 65k per game value varies - that covers rent + additional costs + the maintenance contribution averaged out over the season.

Equally, we can charge well, anything for days outside the 18 day limit.

Well, only have to look at Ninian Park for that. Covenant on the land that it had to be used for sporting facilities, wasnt there?

Not forgetting the plans for a conference centre on CAP have already been drawn up by the council for their bid for the Champions League Final.Uncle Peter can help it be delivered.

Ah, yes, forgot that - Berman believes there will be regular - not single games - but regular CL finals played there. going to be his legacy to Cardiff, see.

It'll be interesting - Thomas engineering a situation where land is sold that he doesn't own to get paid his money back, help WRU oh and lead to statues of Berman on every street corner.

It would make my life to see a Champions League final in Cardiff.

I still don't think it'll happen though, the Yawnion crowd will be bricking themselves at the publicity it would bring to "Wendyball" or whatever they call our beautiful game.

WRU would love the money they gain from the game being played there.

I shouldn't say but the land on which the Arms Park sits has more or less been sold already, there's an "agreement in principle" all very hush, hush to a certain extent but plans have already been drawn up for its redevelopment which just happen to exceed UEFA/FIFA requirements.

I can't remember the exact wording in Lord Bute's? gift to the people of Cardiff but it does specify sporting facility (or whatever the word was back then) for all the people of Cardiff (I actually think it refers to a specific area as well). This bequest has been looked at several times over the years as there was once an objection to rugby being the only sport played on the land but that was a long time ago. The simplest way to circumvent the specifics of the bequest would be to say incorporate a swiming pool within perhaps a hotel? This would be available to members of the public to use although I beleive the filtertration system could be a bit dodgy so no-one allowed in, for example purposes only I might add! Maybe an indoor bowls arena, squash courts, darts pitch, etc all perfectly good "sports" that could be of benefit to good folk of Cardiff.

The above is of course just my opinion and I don't think I've seen any plans for any form of redevelopment of the area ever or dicussed it with any egg worriers who may know or not know of any "funny" business. I have no idea whether any person or persons associated with any other Major sporting team in the City or County of Cardiff may or may not be involved. Be good to have the Millenium Stadium finished though and if they did succed in getting a propper sporting final there (egg world cup doesn't count, as there's more chicken fuckers in Alabama than egg supporters in the entire universe!) what a day out! A nice swim, relaxing game of bowls, throw a few arrows at the token jack then onto the main event, Cardiff City v Barcelona in the European Championship Cup Final sponsored by Peters Pies......

How does Peter Thomas get his millions back by selling the arms park? I thought the athletics club owned it? I have no knowledge of egg so i dont see the connection.

We get about 70k per match that the blues play there. The get charged for everything, taking our posts down, putting their post up,taking their post down, putting ours back up, taking our markings off, putting theirs down, taking theirs up,putting ours down. We really do take the piss out of them,

Cardiff RFC Ltd owe him millions. CAC are big shareholders, from memory - I'd imagine it would involve money going to Cardiff RFC Ltd for the lease being broken...
