How good was he for us? Tom Heaton in form
again In the premier league yet DM kept him out of the team for almost 3 years when he was with us.

Marshall was superb for us in the Championship and Premier League - we would have mustered far fewer than 30 points in the Premier League without his heroics :)

Marshall was at his peak when with us, Heaton was still learning his trade. Would like to think TH learned from DM while he was here.

Also vaguely remember TH coming to watch us play after he left?

IIRC Heaton was an excellent shot stopper for us, tad on the small side in stature for a keeper, thought he was a bit timid in organising his 18 yrd box (a skill no doubt learned with experience).

Excellent keeper he's turned out to be. And we've had a few down the years.

He was the best and most consistent goalkeeper I've seen in watching City from the 1959-1960 season.

I started in 1959/60 too and I agree. Ron Healey a clear second for me.

Marshall and Heaton were the best 2 keepers at the time together at this club we were lucky to have them both ,
Agree with the above post - have to go back to the days of Healey and Irwin ( IMO ) :bluebird:

We have had some good ones over the years. I would add Fred Davies to the names already mentioned. One or two dodgy ones as well, Frank Parsons springs to mind.

John Hallworth was ok ,and Gavin Ward, Ron Healy, Neil Alexander, and Hansbury.

David Marshall still has a house in Rhiwbina I think. He has made the second most number of appearances for a Cardiff City goalie..

And the record holder is..

(Think way back)..

Whilst I appreciate this might not go down well with some on here, nonetheless I have to say it as I see it.

Marshall- kicking out of hand, woeful, kicking/passing the ball on the deck, woeful, coming for crosses, shocking and finally shot stopping, brilliant.

Helton was by far the better all round keeper. :old:

Agree with you about Marshall's distribution.
However, his last two-three seasons with us I thought he started to command his box a lot better and would come for crosses more.

His performances in our last Premier League season were incredible. His distribution was as bad as Etheridge’s, but both are great shot stoppers.

After a slow start, he turned into an excellent goalkeeper. Strange it didn’t work out for him at Hull, can see him back in Scotland before he retires.

Heaton had the potential, but wasn’t as good as Marshall at the time.
