About Wolves

Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club, commonly known as Wolves, is a professional football club in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, England. Formed as St Luke's F.C. in 1877, they have played at Molineux Stadium since 1889 and compete in the Premier League, the top tier of English football, after winning the 2017–18 EFL Championship.

Wolves were one of the founding members of the Football League in 1888. The club spent 33 years in the top flight from 1932 to 1965, their longest continuous period at that level. In the 1950s, they were League champions three times (1953–54, 1957–58 and 1958–59), under the management of Stan Cullis. Wolves also finished League runners-up on five occasions, most recently in 1959–60.

Wolves have won the FA Cup four times, most recently in 1960, and finished runners-up on a further four occasions. The club has also won the Football League Cup twice, in 1974 and 1980.

In 1953, Wolves was one of the first British clubs to install floodlights, taking part in televised "floodlit friendlies" against leading overseas club sides between 1953 and 1956 before the creation of the European Cup in 1955. Wolves reached the quarter-finals of the 1959–60 European Cup and the semi-finals of the 1960–61 European Cup Winners' Cup, and were runners-up to Tottenham Hotspur in the inaugural 1972 UEFA Cup Final.

Wolves' traditional strip consists of gold shirts and black shorts and the club badge one or more wolves. Wolves have long-standing rivalries with other West Midlands clubs, the main one being with West Bromwich Albion, against whom they contest the Black Country derby, although the two clubs have not met in a League fixture since 2011–12, the last season they competed in the same division.

Previous Meeting

We beat Wolves 2-1 in November. Matt Doherty had opened the scoring for the visitors in the first half, but second half goals from Aron Gunnarsson and Junior Hoilett gave us the three points.

Cardiff City injury latest on Victor Camarasa and Joe Ralls as Neil Warnock explains Harry Arter's absence from Everton loss

Cardiff now face Wolves on Saturday after successive defeats to Watford and Everton

Wednesday 27th February 2019

Cardiff City will be boosted by the return of midfielder Victor Camarasa against Wolves, as Neil Warnock provided an injury update following his side's 3-0 defeat to Everton.

Several Bluebirds stars missed the game, Cardiff's second successive defeat at home, including the Spaniard — who's ongoing absence with a calf injury has been a sore point for Warnock.

Oumar Niasse, Joe Ralls and Harry Arter also played no part in the contest, though Warnock said "everybody should be available, hopefully, for the weekend now."

The Cardiff boss was critical of some players after the Everton defeat before insisting he needs players "in the trenches" with him at Molineux this Saturday.

"Two of three let me down — and I won't have that — we'll be strong now," he said.

"I don't want anyone who's not in the trenches with me on Saturday. We've got to stand up and be counted now. That goes for everyone."

Warnock was then asked whether Camarasa was one of those players ready to fight in the trenches for the rest of the season.

The on-loan Real Betis midfielder — who has been one of the Bluebirds best players this season — hasn't started a game since January 19.

"He'll be alright on Saturday because his advisors say he's fit for Saturday," said Warnock, who had spoken angrily about Camarasa's medical team in his pre-Everton press conference.

But he had no doubts Camarasa will return fully committed to the cause.

"Yes when he plays. I can't fault him," Warnock said.

"He's an excellent player, gives us a bit more class than we've got usually. Doesn't shirk. One of the ones you want alongside you — I just hope he doesn't wear his gloves on Saturday, I'm not sure about that."

He then explained why Arter and Ralls missed the Everton game.

"I felt (Harry Arter) was disappointing on Friday night second half," Warnock added.

"I just felt we needed a bit of a change, I wanted to get Bobby Reid in the team.

"And Rallsy had got a bit of a pelvic problem as well.

"We were a little bit short in (midfield), but I don't think that was the reason they scored the goals. It was just mistakes again.

"We've got to regroup now and go down there and get a result. I think we're quite capable of upsetting the odds."

Easy away win for you guys!

Wolves 1 Cardiff 2

We are playing absolute crap, look completely knackered, and sadly I believe the players think they are better than they actually are.
Anyway, would rather Cardiff stop up!

The only way we can beat Wolves is to attack them.
If we go there looking for a point and let them control the ball I can see nothing but another 3-0 loss.

I think we will get a draw 1-1

I said we'd beat Watford 2-1 and draw with Everton 1-1  , but after seeing the last 2 performances I struggle to see us beating Wolves tbh. I reckon it will finish Wolves 2-1 Cardiff.

Match facts

Courtesy of Opta:

Wolves have lost five of their last seven league matches against Cardiff (W2), losing the reverse fixture at the Cardiff City Stadium in November.

Cardiff City, 2-1 winners at Molineux in August 2017, are looking to win consecutive away league matches against Wolves for the first time since February 1988.

Wolves have won four of their last five home matches in all competitions (D1), as many as they’d won in their first 12 games at Molineux this season (W4 D3 L5).

Cardiff have won two of their last four away Premier League games (L2) – as many as in their first 28 in the competition (W2 D6 L20).

Wolves haven’t lost consecutive matches in all competitions since November 2018, when they lost against Huddersfield and Cardiff.

Cardiff have conceded at least three goals in 11 different Premier League games this season, more than any other side.

Wolves failed to register a shot on target in their 0-1 defeat to Huddersfield, only the third time they had failed to do so in a league match under Nuno Espirito Santo (also against Barnsley in January 2018 and Man City in January 2019).

Cardiff City have registered a pass accuracy of just 64.2% this season, the lowest tally by a Premier League team in a season since Stoke City in 2010-11 (64%).

Nuno Espirito Santo’s first defeat as Wolves boss was against Cardiff City – the Bluebirds are one of only two teams he has lost more than once against as Wolves boss, along with Huddersfield Town.

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock’s only previous top-flight league visit to Wolves came in September 2011 as QPR manager, a 3-0 victory – it remains Warnock’s biggest away top-flight victory in 71 such games.

Going 2-0 to Cardiff, with the players back from injury we’ve got a strong squad, we always seem to grind a result out against Wolves.

C’mon bluebirds

It’s a ridiculous starting line up again from Lennie Lawrence. Manga instead of morrison and after instead of league one Ralls and I’d think a point was obtainable. Wolves B team must be laughing. 2 isolated strikers with a bunch of no hopers behind them unfortunately.

Camarasa has been involved for Cardiff in these early stages - with most of the play taking place in the Wolves half.

It looks like a 4-3-2-1 from Cardiff, with Niasse and Reid floating around in the space behind Zohore.

The only threat from Wolves so far has come from a Diogo Jota run down the left, but Morrison and Gunnarsson combine to see it out.

If you’re Neil Warnock, you’re very happy with what you’ve seen in the opening 10 minutes or so.
