Burnley FC have banned a supporter and police are investigating after social media posts appeared online referring to Cardiff City's Emiliano Sala.

Police have confirmed they are investigating the posts on Twitter, which appeared online in the aftermath of Cardiff City's 2-0 defeat away at Burnley at the weekend.

One tweet read: "We all live in a Sala submarine.... the latest number 1 in Cardiff", while another post read: "We all live in a Sala submarine... Welsh c**** like bantering everyone else hows your drunken sailor?"

The tweets, published on Sunday evening, were posted on the account of Gary Kay, with an apology since being issued on the same account.

On Monday, Kay - who is described on Twitter as a Burnley fan - said: "I would like to take this opportunity to apologise unreservedly for any offence caused to Cardiff City, Cardiff City fans or anyone affected by the recent post yesterday [Sunday] evening on this profile. and across various social media platforms."

Sala was killed after the plane he was travelling in crashed into the English Channel in January. Pilot David Ibbotson has not been found.

Police say an investigation is ongoing after they received a complaint about alleged malicious communications.

Elsewhere, Burnley FC have taken action and banned the supporter from the club's ground "with immediate effect" pending a police probe.

A club statement issued on Monday afternoon said: "Burnley Football Club has today taken action against a supporter following a number of offensive social media posts, made following Saturday’s Premier league game v Cardiff City.

"The club, which has a strict zero tolerance policy to any racial, or discriminatory behaviour, strongly condemns the posts.

"We are grateful to supporters for bringing them to the club’s attention and, following a meeting with club officials this morning, the person responsible has been banned with immediate effect from Turf Moor, pending the conclusion of a police investigation."

On a separate incident, the club added: "Burnley Football Club also continues to liaise with Lancashire Constabulary regarding a post-match incident outside Turf Moor on Saturday, involving both Burnley and Cardiff City supporters."

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “We have received a complaint regarding alleged malicious communications made on social media.

"We are aware of the matter and an investigation is on-going.”

What a sick individual. There is Banter and there is Malice.
Not even a Jack would sing something like that. Actually from what I have read, they have been very sympathetic and supportive. I am actually looking forward to playing them in the Championship if we go down and they stay down.
I miss the derby. PL is not all it’s cracked out to be.
