Lower League Bargains?

Thu May 16, 2019 10:37 am

As we know etheridge and mendez laing have turned out good quality players signed from the lower leagues for a bargain, league 1 i believe...

Anyone know of any league 1 or below players who are genuinely quality and could make the step up to be a top championship player and even premier league quality?

Dimitri Cavare (RB – Barnsley)
Barnsley’s dynamic French right-back was signed from Rennes during the summer of 2017 after injury had held back a burgeoning career. This season he has really come to the fore, starting in August when he was nominated for the League One Player of the Month award, after his attacking prowess served up four assists and a stunning goal against Scunthorpe.

Ethan Pinnock (CB – Barnsley)
The 25-year-old Londoner has made a massive impression since his switch north after helping Forest Green into the EFL in 2016/17. He established himself at the heart of the Tykes defence this season playing in all league games at the time of writing. Commanding in the air, he is also is a superb distributor in the mould of former Oakwell aces John Stones and Alfie Mawson.

Matthew Clarke (CB – Portsmouth)
The rock at the heart of the defence who helped Portsmouth roar out of the blocks and move six points clear at the top by early December. He racked up his 150th appearance for Pompey in January and is one of the fiercest competitors in League One. By the middle of March he had played in all Portsmouth’s 38 games. Pompey’s Player of the Year last season is favourite to win the award again despite being only 22 years old.

Tyler Walker (FW – Mansfield Town)
Tyler Walker has proven to be as effective as his iconic father, Des, this season – albeit at the other end of the pitch. The son of the former England international has set League Two alight with his lightning pace and instinctive finishing ability. On loan at Mansfield from Nottingham Forest, it would be no surprise to see the youngster featuring regularly in the Championship next year.

A few who spring to mind are;

Danny Mayor of Bury, attacking winger, bit in the mould of Craig Noone / Chris Burke
Ivan Toney of Peteboro – Striker, only 23 and could make step up
Lyle Taylor – Charlton striker and would easily make step up, looks the real deal IMO
Jordan Clark – Accrington box to box midfielder, one of their better players
Tom Bayliss – Coventry midfielder, looks a good prospect as he’s only 20 years old.
Herbie Kane – Doncaster player on loan from Liverpool, very good prospect for the future, was in L1 team of the season

I hope we do look to some of the younger lower league players to fill the squad, I see more merit in someone like that than people like Jazz Richards and Rhys Healy.

Also hope we look at the free market as well.

Last thing we need after all the hard work to get us close to debt free is to waste a load of money.

Surprised no one has mentioned creative midfielder Marcus Maddison from Peterborough who's available on a free in the summer. He's only 25 and in the past 3 seasons he's managed 11 goals 18 assists in 16/17 season, then 9 goals and 23 assists in 17/18 season and this season he's got 8 goals and 23 assists from midfield in league 1. The guy is phenomenal and would be a great replacement for Victor Camarasa.

Sounds a great option on a free. Could be a good addition as 3 of the squad signings neil wants, fight for a place and could turn out a quality bargain, those assist stats are brilliant :ayatollah:
