Music Cardiff have run out to

Tue Feb 11, 2020 11:47 am

Hey everyone,

I hope this is the right place for this post - if it isn’t, any admins/moderators please feel free to move it.

I’m part of a team at the University of Sheffield, led by Dr Chris
Stride. We've published a number of academic papers and magazine
articles relating to football history, on subjects such as statues and
replica shirts (see, for example sportingstatues.com, and
https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10 ... 19.1578255).

Our current project is investigating the music that football teams have
run or walked out of the tunnel to over the years.

We are looking for the music that Cardiff have run out to, for as
many seasons in the past as you can recall. We are simply interested in
the title of the song, the artist who recorded it, and for which seasons
Cardiff ran out to this. Any help you can give us to
piece together the different songs that your club has run out to would
be hugely appreciated.

If you have any personal anecdotes around the reasons for the songs
being used, or the changes between them, that would also be fantastic.

I should also add that we are not interested in goal music, or a song
that is played at the final whistle, but just the song that is on the
tannoy system as the players enter the field.

If you think someone else may be able to help, or you have any
questions, please let us know! We would be very happy to discuss the
project.

Thanks for your time guys,

Joe Headland

Can't remember all of the seasons but tunes include Motorhead It's all about the game, Hey Jude by the Beatles, The Stand I'll be there and also a Stone Roses tune that I think Man U come out to as well. And of course Men of Harlech.

Simply The Best, Tina Turner was one I remember at Ninian Park, probably early 90's.

I think you may be right. Rings a bell and a song I liked. They always played that Welsh song by Dafydd Iwan as well, think it was called Yma o Hyd or something, but Cardiff never actually ran out to that song, was normally played a bit earlier by Ali if I remember correctly.

A sensible researcher, unusual in academia.
Did we used to run out to ring of fire or was that a pre run out song?

Simply the best was my favourite, ironic, especially back in the day haha. Can still remember the moment in the song, the players started walking out.

This song always reminds me of my deceased Grandfather who introduced me to football at Ninian
Park and watching us in the lower tiers. Always puts a smile on my face and for me is an iconic Cardiff City song.

I can relate to this aswell lads.

Brings back memories of when I first started the team running out to that in the early 90s.

If I here that song, I instantly go back to Ninian Park as a kid.

Mad how a song can evoke such real emotions.

Anyone from that era who says they don’t smile when they hear that song is a lier.

Probably brings back good memories for you going down with your grandfather. Not so many of us there back then, I think that was an era where 8k was a good crowd.

Time for action. Secret Affair. Think Ali might have been responsible for that around the early 2000s

I think your right on the “brings back good memories” comment as he passed away in 1996.

Both my brother and I joined the military in 1999 and when we returned as regular season ticket holders in 2014 the club was unrecognisable to us as we hadn’t witnessed the gradual change since the Ninian Park days, some for the better and some for the worse. It probably explains why I’m really grateful we’re in the Championship and not the basement division.

Pretty sure You're The Voice by John Farnham was a regular choice in 87/88 season.
There must be a link to that season because every time i hear it, I think of Jimmy Gilligan!

The season after the Cup Final didn't we run out to that Cup Final song by that local bloke who'd been on the X Factor?

Was his name James Fox perhaps?

Same here the irony of getting battered in the dungeon away from home then the following week our heroes running out to a few thousand to this song. Really happy days.

 A valid point reference our heroes, although I only did a handful of away games myself.

My late Grandfather knew Wayne Nash from Rhymney and Tredegar Golf Club when he was the groundsman at Ninian Park. He would take me down in the summer to look at the stadium (imagine just walking in these days), including the grass, and say Wayne is doing a good job (banter incoming ) In hindsight, it was a waste of 60 miles worth of fuel.

The you’ll never ban a City fan song. Recorded version in Spanish, obviously not the lyrics we use lol.
Simply the Best by Tina Turner, when we were totally garbage. Got to be honest, I absolutely despise that song!

Don’t think we ran out to music late 70s early 80s.. but the Dj only had two records then.. That’s the way(I like it) by KC, and Don’t Go by Yazoo.. it sounded as if it was a wind up record player with the speaker facing the mic.
