:bluebird: :bluebird: “ NEIL HARRIS TODAY UPDATES CARDIFF CITY FANS “ :bluebird: :bluebird:

Friday 14th February 2020

NEIL HARRIS:

"Jazz and Bennett at full back are looking solid and reliable, I knew I could always rely on Jazz to come good."

Where do you rank this Cardiff team?

Harris: West Brom are six points clear and the best team in the league. But we beat them two weeks ago.

NEIL HARRIS:

"We're enjoying it."

"We've won two games on the spin, unbeaten in six games, the play-offs are very achievable target for this squad, there is a genuine buzz around the place right now, underpinned by a palpable spirit of togetherness."

What’s the team news looking like for Wigan?

Neil Harris: Injury-wise, we are good. As we were going into the game midweek.

Everyone has come through Wednesday unscathed. It now comes down to the players.

Joe Ralls is doing really well. This weekend is too soon for him. We are hoping he will come through training today and tomorrow morning.

:bluescarf: :bluescarf: “ READ ALL NEIL HARRIS UPDATES TODAY “ :bluescarf: :bluescarf:

'Everyone knows Josh's ability'

Is Josh Murphy turning things around for the club?

Harris: It’s early days for him. Keep him focused. With Josh, ability is not a question, is it? Everyone knows his capability.

But how we want to play with or without the ball is key, some get it quickly and some take time to get up to speed.

You want players in form, with confidence and what the manager demands with or without the ball.

On the whole, morale seems sky high at the moment.

NEIL HARRIS:

"We're enjoying it," Harris said.

"We've won two games on the spin, unbeaten in six games, the play-offs are very achievable target for this squad, there is a genuine buzz around the place right now, underpinned by a palpable spirit of togetherness."

"It's enjoyable coming to the training ground. The players are enjoying it. They're a great group to work with. We had a busy window. More so with players going than coming in.

"But the group's really focused and really happy. There's a really good feel about the place and we just have to continue that.

"We will lose a game again at some stage and we will have some bad luck, but it's about how quickly you deal with that and isolate it.

"But at the moment, we're really happy with what we're doing."

NEIL HARRIS:

'The teams above us will look over their shoulder if we win on the weekend'

Are play-off chances in sight?

Neil Harris: "They are more realistic than they were seven days ago. I’d love to get carried away and get everyone excited. But you can go from 8th to 12th really quickly, but you can also go up to fourth really quickly.

But we are a much better group now than we were a few weeks ago.

We’ve got the spirit and togetherness.

At Luton we had to dig really deep and then Huddersfield is about as good an away performance as you’re likely to see in the Championship.

Every bit of focus and energy they put in the last two games we have to follow that up.

We are in a good position. The teams above us will look over their shoulder if we win on the weekend."

'It's a solid team'

On Murphy’s stats...

Harris: "I am careful not to put onus on Josh Murphy or Lee Tomlin, or Sean Morrison or Alex Smithies. It’s being a really solid team."

NEIL HARRIS:

Where this Cardiff team ranks

Where do you rank this Cardiff team?

"Harris: West Brom are six points clear and the best team in the league. But we beat them two weeks ago.

We played better football and physically outmuscled them. We came from three behind at Leeds to get a result.

We’ve gone toe to toe with mid-table teams, Millwall, Preston, we’ve shown different ways of doing it.

It’s the consistency that I’ve been after."

NEIL HARRIS:

Harris: 'I am happy but I always want more'

Are you a happy man?

Harris: "I am, but I always want more."

"I always put that demand on players.

They are getting to grips with me and my standards.

We’ve had to do some real hard yards.

Very limited time on the grass so we have had to find out about our performances on the pitch.

We know we are moving in the right direction, but that can quickly disappear.

We find ourselves on the fringes of the play-offs, but now we want to be in there."

NEIL HARRIS:

'Turning draws into wins is vital moving forward'

Are you a hard team to beat?

Harris: "It shows our defensive capabilities. We have been right up there with the amount of draws in English football.

Turning draws into wins is vital moving forward.

We’ve given very few chances away, expected goals, barring QPR, we don’t give clear-cut chances."

NEIL HARRIS:

'Players need structure and freedom to express themselves'

On playing style...

Harris: "We have played different ways. Passing the ball well at times, maybe overpassing it - not passing forward enough in key moments.

Birmingham, we passed it sidewards and didn’t go anywhere. We need to find that balance.

Players need a structure to play from but they need freedom to express themselves."

NEIL HARRIS:

'We have still got a long way to go'

Is there a moment in training where it was paying off?

Harris: "We are not there at the moment. We have still got a long way to go and loads to improve on.

In the Championship it is important to have different ways.

Coaches are too tactically minded and players are good enough to adapt."

"Form is temporary.

At the moment, with every player we have put in they have performed."

NEIL HARRIS:

"'We have to be respectful of the fact we are not on a huge run'"

Can you cement this run of form and kick on?

Harris: "We have, but we have to be respectful to the fact we are not on a huge run.

We are building and we have given ourselves a great chance, but I don’t want to get expectation levels too high.

Ever since I’ve come in we’ve just expected to be a top-six side, but you really have to earn that right in this division.

So I don’t want to get carried away, as boring as that may sound

What we’ve done in the last two games, three games, four, five, six games, has been really pleasing.

However, it’s all about Wigan Athletic at home.

What I’m seeing at the moment is us at our best is good enough to win games of Championship football."

He has had exposure to the first-team squad. He has been elevated quite quickly into the U23s and we want to work and develop him."

Harris' reaction to Vaulks celebration

On Will Vaulks’ celebration:

Harris: "I’ve been looking forward to seeing that. It was a set-play we had worked on on the training pitch.

The celebration was impressive but so was the delivery from Marlon."

NEIL HARRIS"

"We're not going to get carried away."

"Every year there does seem to be a team that does have a little bit of a surge but we're on a good run of form. I've talked really honestly about turning a lot of draws into wins. We did that at Luton. We found a way, with a reliable goalscorer in Tommo and we've won again."

"We're maneuvering ourselves into a nice position, but you have to keep doing it at this level."

"We have a points total we want to get to give us a chance of getting to the play-offs. But it's just about winning games. What I know about the group in there is the winning mentality in a lot of those lads. They've won promotion before and they want to do it again.

"But at the moment that's a long way off for us."

The selection headache that awaits Harris

The form of Will Vaulks has been a big topic for discussion in recent weeks.

Having been on the fringes of the first team set-up since his arrival in the summer, the midfielder was even tipped to leave the Cardiff City Stadium in January.

Now, the former Rotherham man is in the best form of his Cardiff City career. Perhaps even his career full stop.

Vaulks worked well alongside the tenacious Marlon Pack on Wednesday night, pulling the strings in the middle of the park and netting an excellent goal.

Having initially struggled to break into the side, it's now hugely difficult to see how can be left out, such is his newfound importance.

It's the role that was once occupied so brilliantly by Joe Ralls, who remains on the road back to full fitness, and will no doubt be waiting in the wings soon.

And, Harris admits he may well have a selection headache on his hands when it comes to options in the middle of the park.

"We're really strong in there. Really, really strong. Rallsy will hopefully be back in the training group at the weekend and you get to the stage where there's a competition for places and those who've got the shirts, it's down to them to lose them through form, injury suspension and for someone else to grab it.

"At the moment Will and Marlon are looking a really good pair. Rallsy's a super player and Leo [Bacuna] has been very good for me."

NEIL HARRIS:

'We are aware of Kieffer Moore's talents'

What about Kieffer Moore, who could have been a Cardiff City player?

Harris: We were linked with Kieffer, he’s been in form for the national team and we are the capital city.

We are aware of his attributes and talents. Keeping him quiet is a big part of stopping Wigan."

NEIL HARRIS:

"Some people have to be a little bit patient to find their way back in, Sean Morrison for example."

"Murphs has been one that has taken a little bit longer, probably like (Will) Vaulks to an extent. A little bit longer to get the way I want to play and understand both sides of the game.

"It's not just about with the ball, it's without the ball as well, and how disciplined we have to be and hard working.

"There's a trust element in the group. I've said to the guys you have to trust the fella standing next to you to be a really good team and at the moment that trust is there in the group.

"Josh, if he keeps doing that will keep getting his rewards because we all know his capabilities and ability with the ball."

Brad Smith in the mix for Wigan

What about Brad Smith?

Harris: He’s done great.

He’s played 90 minutes in the week but game time has been limited. We set a game up at the Vale behind closed doors and played 90 minutes on Tuesday night so he is up to speed and comes into the reckoning.

'Wigan have individual players who can cause problems'

You’ve got Wigan at home, with their poor away form - fancy your chances?

Harris: It’s the same Wigan team that won at Leeds last week.

I went to the game on Tuesday evening to watch them against Middlesbrough and they put in a fine display until the red card.

They’ve got individual players who can cause you problems, but we focus on ourselves.

The players want a happy dressing room."

Whether you play forward quickly, make your passes, but it’s all about running. The goal just summed it up."

NEIL HARRIS:

'A settled team and good combinations'

Defensive rigidity, what’s changed?

Harris: "To address QPR, coming off the back of Sheffield Wednesday, we changed shape and gave the team an opportunity to stay in that, which is something we are going to learn from.

A settled team and good combinations.

Sol has come back into the group, played in the Cup games and done well, Flinty has played a lot for me and done well.

Morrison and Nelson are a good pair at the moment, solid, reliable and aggressive. They like contact and can both run, which is key.

Jazz and Bennett at full back are looking solid and reliable, I knew I could always rely on Jazz to come good.

The defence itself, with Alex coming in and giving a real solidness. He’s a vocal goalkeeper and where we were a little bit unsure, conceding too many goals, Alex has given everyone a boost. No disrespect to Neil, he is a top goalkeeper.

We are very hard to break down.

How many saves does Alex have to make? Because the shape in front is so good. It gives you real confidence."

NEIL HARRIS:

'Everyone wants to play and train'

What about continuity, selecting the same team and a fixture pile-up?

Harris: "That’s the million dollar question going into tomorrow.

And that’s not just for Neil Harris to consider, that’s everybody in the Championship with Saturday-Tuesday or Saturday-Wednesday.

Looking at freshness and continuity. That’s where the management side of it comes in.

Who’s maybe carrying fatigue and knocks. But who is in form? Who will run through a brick wall for me?

Everyone wants to play and train. The GPS numbers on the training pitch are huge. That’s testament to the work ethic in the group."

NEIL HARRIS:

Smith an 'attack-minded full back'

What was Steve Morison’s scouting report on Brad Smith?

Harris: He was really pleased with him. We were up in the snow at Huddersfield. Really pleased with him though, more, for us, about legs, fitness-wise.

He’s an attack-minded full back who will just run and run and run. But it’s the runs back towards goal in the 80th minute that really test you.

NEIL HARRIS:

Harris explains Lee Peltier exit

Can you shed any light on Lee Peltier’s exit?

Harris: "Firstly, great servant to the club, great to work with on the training pitch, a lot of time for Lee.

You just get to a stage with senior players when you put a lot of things into the mix. But, ultimately, we got to a situation on deadline day where Lee got an opportunity to move to West Brom, an hour away from his family home with his children, and to go to a team that’s top of the league and will likely go to play in the Premier League.

And Lee had an opportunity, contractually, to go and play in the Premier League next year.

As much as if we wanted to keep him and if he was thinking about playing at Cardiff, an hour from home, chance of Premier League football? That’s a big draw.

But Lee goes with our regards and best wishes for the future.

Was there a dispute over a contract?

At the end of the day, players with four months left ultimately decide what they want to do.

There’s a lot of thought process that goes in here, trying to have a younger group with energy and balancing that off with good lads.

Lee falls into so many categories but we got to a stage where decisions were being made on contracts, but Lee got an opportunity to go to West Brom and it was a great opportunity for him."

NEIL HARRIS:

Sanderson 'ready to come in if required'

Is Dion Sanderson in the reckoning?

Harris: "It’s something I’ve got to consider, with fresh legs. Dion has travelled with the group because we want him to understand what’s required of him.

Dion is fit and athletic and he is ready to come in if required."

NEIL HARRIS:

'Cameron Coxe needs to go out and play football'

Where does this leave Cameron Coxe?

Harris: "He’s played in a couple of Cup games and done okay in spells. We just don’t feel he is ready for first-team level, Championship football.

He’s been around the first team a long time without playing much football. Some players need to go out, defenders in particular.

He needs to go out and play. League One, League Two or even the Conference to play men’s football.

Young men who have potential with us, we need to give them a chance to go and play National League football."

'People will fear Cardiff City!' Neil Harris targets promotion rivals as season finally ignites

By Katie Sanders

Friday 14th February 2020

"This squad is good enough for the top six."

The Bluebirds are looking to make it nine points in a week - a return that will put them firmly in the play-off picture

Neil Harris believes a Cardiff City win over Wigan Athletic this weekend will strike fear into the Bluebirds' Championship play-off rivals.

Cardiff were at their very best under Harris on Wednesday night, thrashing Huddersfield Town 3-0 at the John Smith's Stadium and, suddenly, there is a great optimism enveloping the Welsh capital club.

Ahead of Saturday's tie with lowly Wigan Athletic, City sit in eighth place but, crucially, just four points away from the play-offs and just seven away from the automatic promotion spots.

They have lost just two league games under Harris during his 16 matches in charge and have proven incredibly difficult to beat, QPR away aside.

But it is in the last week or so Cardiff have really emerged as serious contenders for the play-offs, winning three of their last four fixtures, yielding 10 points from a possible 12.

Harris believes teams will seriously begin to take notice if they take all three points from their game against the Latics on Saturday afternoon.

With so much of the season having been centred around clawing their way back up the ladder, he believes a positive result this weekend could cause a stir among the teams above them.

"We’re in a good position and teams above us will be looking over their shoulder if we can get the result at the weekend, if we can make it nine points in a week, people will be looking at Cardiff and fearing them.

"We are building and we have given ourselves a great chance, but I don’t want to get expectation levels too high.

"We can still be much better than we are and we know that. We want to do that.

"We have taken those small steps to get where we are and now all of a sudden, out of the blue, we find ourselves on the fringes of the play-offs.

"But now we are on the fringes - I want to be in there."

"This squad is good enough for the top six."

From the very moment Harris took his first press conference, the manager made no secret of the fact that his sights were firmly set on the play-off spots, despite Neil Warnock leaving City in 14th place.

Given this Bluebirds side had just been relegated from the Premier League, many tipped them to bounce straight back up and Cardiff supporters were expecting their side to be challenging at the top end of the table, rather than becoming embroiled in a mid-table scrap.

And while there is now a quiet optimism stirring in the Welsh capital following recent results, Harris sent a reminder that their legs could be cut out from beneath them if they slip up now.

"The play-off chances are more realistic than they were seven days ago, I would love to get carried away and get really excited but we have to be sensible," he added.

"The table is so tight, you can go from eighth to 12th really quickly but you can also go from eighth to fourth quickly as well.

"What I do know about us is that we’re getting better all the time, we’re a much better group now than we were a few weeks ago and that’s key for us, if you want to be successful you have that spirit and togetherness.

"We have to follow two really good away performances with a strong performance at home.

"The players need to realise that for every bit of energy and focus and discipline they put in needs be followed up with more, and the creative side of things as well needs to be backed up at home.
