China denies 'cover-up' and defends WHO

The Chinese government has rejected “unfair and unjust” allegations that it tried to “cover up” the coronavirus outbreak in the city where it began.

Zhao Lijian, a foreign ministry spokesman, said China had been “open, transparent and responsible” in informing the world about the epidemic.

He said it “took us some time before we knew more about” the virus, which was officially first detected in the city of Wuhan, in Hubei province, late last year.

China is widely considered to have concealed the extent, severity and even existence of Covid-19 during the early stages of the outbreak

IMHO the PRC shouldn't only have a trade embargo, but those in charge should be tried in the Hague for crimes against humanity. They denied there was a problem to the WHO, even though Taiwan had intercepted messages from the Wuhan whistle blower, Dr Li Wenliang warning of a SARS type virus. The WHO backed China, while Chinese companies started buying up all available masks and PPE, leaving other countries with shortages and exposing them to the virus.

A good month for dogs in China

Last week, the Chinese city of Shenzhen became the first to ban the sale and consumption of dog and cat meat.

And now China may reclassify dogs as pets rather than livestock, after the virus outbreak - which began in a market selling live animals - prompted the country to review its laws around the wildlife trade.

"With the progress of human civilisation... dogs have changed from traditional domestic animals to companion animals," said the country's agriculture authority in a proposed policy, according to a state media report.

"Dogs are generally not regarded as livestock... and China should also not manage them as [that]."

The draft policy is now open to the public for consultation.

And yet one of our medical experts was praising them yesterday for handing over their research and other vital data so quickly and described their actions as a massive help.Just saying like.....................The Americans were responsible for the Spanish flu and they were also responsible for the 2008 market crash but no seems to have ostracized them.

I just searched for 'medical experts praise China for handing over research and other vital data so quickly', but no relevant articles etc from yesterday or previously. Furthermore, if the PRC hadn't lied about the virus in December, 95% of cases and deaths wouldn't have happened around the world. The research and data should have handed to the WHO in December as required by the International Health Regulations.

The International Health Regulations require that states monitor and share all information regarding “clinical descriptions, laboratory results, sources and type of risk, numbers of human cases and deaths, conditions affecting the spread of the disease, and the health measures employed” with respect to potential outbreaks.

' A University of Southampton study has previously found that — should strict quarantine measures have been introduced three weeks earlier — the disease’s spread would have been reduced by some 95%.'

I thought that this discussion was about the PRC and their lying about the Coronavirus, yet you adopt the typical left wing defence and change the subject. This is the point where when talking face to face, those on the left usually raise their voices and interrupt answers with more questions. Anyway, my answers on the new subjects are below :-

We know that SARS, Swine Flu and Bird Flu originated in China and that Spanish flu has research suggesting that it also originated in China. China is a country with a huge population, with many exposed to the animals from which a lot of these viruses start.

'One of the few regions of the world seemingly less affected by the 1918 flu pandemic was China, where there may have been a comparatively mild flu season in 1918 (although this is disputed due to lack of data during the Warlord Period of China, see Around the globe). Multiple studies have documented that there were relatively few deaths from the flu in China compared to other regions of the world.[26][27][28] This has led to speculation that the 1918 flu pandemic originated in China.[29][27][30][31] The relatively mild flu season and lower rates of flu mortality in China in 1918 may be explained due to the fact that the Chinese population had already possessed acquired immunity to the flu virus.[32][29][27]

In 1993, Claude Hannoun, the leading expert on the 1918 flu for the Pasteur Institute, asserted the former virus was likely to have come from China. It then mutated in the United States near Boston and from there spread to Brest, France, Europe's battlefields, Europe, and the world with Allied soldiers and sailors as the main disseminators.[33]

In 2014, historian Mark Humphries argued that the mobilization of 96,000 Chinese laborers to work behind the British and French lines might have been the source of the pandemic. Humphries, of the Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's, based his conclusions on newly unearthed records. He found archival evidence that a respiratory illness that struck northern China in November 1917 was identified a year later by Chinese health officials as identical to the Spanish flu.'

The 2008 crash did start in the US, but the crash did the most damage in the US and is arguably as much to do with global banking than US business practice and legislation. The PRC is also a member of the G20 and the IMF and both organisations are just as complicit in the 2008 crash.

The initial G20 agenda, as conceived by US, Canadian and German policy makers, was very much focused on the sustainability of sovereign debt and global financial stability,

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an organization of 189 countries, working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world.

Wuhan health official fears second wave risk

It’s been three days since Wuhan, the Chinese city of 11 million where the pandemic began, emerged from its more than two months in lockdown.

But as Wuhan and other parts of the country re-open, Chinese health officials are worried about a possible second wave of coronavirus cases.

“We can’t say that there is no such potential risk,” Wang Xinghuan, the president of a hospital built for coronavirus patients in Wuhan, told Reuters news agency.

In recent days, China has seen a rise in new coronavirus cases, most of which have been imported from abroad.

On Friday, 46 new cases of the virus were reported, up from 42 new cases a day earlier, Chinese health authorities said.

Of those new cases reported on Friday, 42 were from abroad.

Another 34 asymptomatic cases were reported on Friday too, heightening concern that cases from abroad may be going undetected.

You might be wondering if China's coronavirus figures can trusted.

Africans evicted from homes in China over virus rumours

Danny Vincent

BBC News, Hong Kong

Early last week unfounded rumours began to emerge that African communities had become a new hotbed for the coronavirus in the Chinese city of Guangzhou.

Soon after, health officials began door-to-door testing targeting African immigrants.

Landlords and hotels have evicted hundreds of Africans. Many, including community leaders, were forced into quarantine despite testing negative for the virus.

Hundreds now remain homeless as fears grow that cities like Guangzhou could face a second wave of the outbreak.

Various African ambassadors in China have written to the country’s foreign minister to voice complaints about “stigmatisation and discrimination”.

On Saturday, the Chinese embassy in Zimbabwe dismissed the accusations in a tweet: “China treats all individuals in the country, Chinese and foreign alike, as equals.”

Guangzhou was the largest African community in Asia in the late 2000s, but over the last five years the numbers of Africans living in the city have dwindled. Many say they face frequent discrimination, visa restrictions and challenges in doing business.

I spoke to one evicted student from Nigeria who told me he had been forced into hiding.
“I am running [from the police] because of the way they are testing people and claiming that the person has a sickness, bringing all sorts of injections," he said.

"They are going to houses and bringing people out, keeping them in hotels. I am just hiding and living by the grace of God."

Britons FURIOUS at Beijing for COVID-19 outbreak as they demand an END to trade with China

BRITONS reacted furiously at Beijing for allowing the COVID-19 outbreak to become a worldwide pandemic and called for an end to trade with China.

By BILL MCLOUGHLIN
PUBLISHED: 21:05, Sun, Apr 12, 2020 | UPDATED: 21:05, Sun, Apr 12, 2020

China was the initial epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak but has since emerged from its lockdown after containing the virus. Although it has now contained the virus, the Chinese government has been criticised for its initial response to the contagion by some Conservative MPs. A recent UK poll conducted by Redfield & Wilton Strategies showed 55 percent of Britons believe the Chinese government was to blame for the COVID-19 outbreak.

Reacting to the poll, Express.co.uk readers expressed their fury at Beijing for allowing the virus to spread worldwide.

David Painter said: "Whatever the decisions made at the outbreak of this terrible virus may now be criticised in hindsight.

"The whole situation the world faces can be laid at China door.

"Their total contempt for all has been a demonstration to the rest of the world what very dangerous people we face."

What to make of China's numbers

Robin Brant

BBC News, Shanghai

The numbers are relatively small but the trend is upwards, and that is not good for China.

The 108 new confirmed cases is the highest number of daily infections in more than five weeks in the officially reported government numbers.

The main reason, according to the statistics, is a continued stream of Chinese nationals returning home. They account for almost all the confirmed cases. Almost half are concentrated in the northern province of Heilongjiang, where some Chinese crossing from Russia have brought it with them.

Despite severe restrictions on international travel coming into China, the reality is the government hasn’t been able to completely stop new cases of the virus emerging.

In the province of Hubei, where it all began, the numbers are very small but people are still dying. Two new deaths there have been reported.

That’s despite the fact it was deemed safe enough to open up to the rest of China and the world.

No matter what happens after all this.. China will simply not tell anyone what, why and how this virus became what it did throughout the world. China are hiding secrets about the virus plane and simple and of course they will always try and cover there tracks by denying it all.

France summons Chinese ambassador over Covid-19 criticism

France’s foreign minister has summoned the Chinese ambassador following comments made on the embassy's website about western countries’ handling of Covid-19.

The comments were made by an unnamed diplomat and in part suggested that pensioners had been left to die in nursing homes.

Yves Le Drian said he expressed his disapproval to ambassador Lu Shaye on Tuesday.

In a statement he said: “Certain publicly voiced opinions by representatives of the Chinese embassy in France are not in line with the quality of the bilateral relation between our two countries.”

BREAKING

China denies cover-up of deaths

China has denied there has been a cover-up of the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

The comments by Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian came hours after the death toll in Wuhan, where the virus first emerged, was revised upwards by 1,290 people.

He said this was the result of a statistical review to ensure accuracy and that revisions are a common international practice, Reuters news agency reports.

Macron labels China virus praise 'naive'

French President Emmanuel Macron has added his voice to growing sceptism of China's handling of the outbreak of coronavirus.

Asked if China's authoritarian response to bring the outbreak under control had exposed the weakness of Western democracies, Mr Macron said that there was no comparison between open societies and those where truth was suppressed.

“Given these differences, the choices made and what China is today, which I respect, let’s not be so naive as to say it’s been much better at handling this,” he told the Financial Times. “We don’t know. There are clearly things that have happened that we don’t know about.”

His comments came as China revised its death toll from the city of Wuhan, where the outbreak started, up by 50% on Friday.

China defends coronavirus death toll

As we reported earlier, China has denied there was a cover-up on the number of deaths caused by the coronavirus, hours after it added 1,290 fatalities to its toll.

"There has never been any concealment, and we'll never allow any concealment," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian.

But China's official data has frequently been called into question. Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump said the numbers "seem to be a little bit on the light side".

And on Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron said in an interview "there are clearly things that have happened that we don’t know about”.

Earlier, the city of Wuhan - where the pandemic first started - raised its death toll by 50%, attributing it to updated reporting and more deaths from outside hospitals being counted.

Trump warns China could face consequences if 'knowingly responsible' for outbreak

US President Donald Trump warned that China could face consequences if it was "knowingly responsible" for the coronavirus pandemic, as he ratcheted up criticism of Beijing over its handling of the outbreak.

"It could have been stopped in China before it started and it wasn't," Mr Trump said at a White House briefing. "And now the whole world is suffering because of it."
