Boris Johnson announces new lockdown rules

Mr Johnson announces the new rules for lockdown, effective tomorrow.

They are:

Anyone who can’t work from home, for instance those in construction or manufacturing, should be actively encouraged to go to work.

Public should avoid public transport if at all possible - workers should travel by car, bike or walking.

New guidance for employers will make workplaces "Covid-secure".

Public can now “sit in the sun in your local park, drive to other destinations, even play sports, but only with members of the same household.

Public must obey the rules on social distancing, and fines will increase for breaking them.

Yes. But that's not Boris' fault. I think there was a thinly veiled stop the bullshit and political point scoring message to Scotland and Wales at the start.

Jimmy - The Gov went ahead and decided what they wanted to do and then rang all 3 FM and tell them the plan late afternoon on Thursday .
All 4 should have spoken before hand / agreed and the PM gave the statement - Your point scoring is clear to see from 4 different parties here.

So here is the post again about our United Kingdom ( All 4 nations working together )

Politicians in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have not agreed to the UK government's new coronavirus message, Wales' health minister has said.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to unveil a new slogan, telling the public to "stay alert, control the virus, save lives".

But Vaughan Gething said there had not been a "four-nations agreement" on it.

The UK government is responsible for the lockdown in England.

First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon tweeted the Sunday papers were the "first" she had seen of the new slogan.

In an interview on BBC One's Politics Wales, First Minister Mark Drakeford stressed people should stay home except for the "limited" reasons given.

Furlough scheme set to be extended to September

Ministers are expected to extend the state bankrolling of wages until the end of September, albeit at a reduced rate of 60pc, while also topping up the pay packets of staff brought back to work on a part-time basis.

Changes to the furlough scheme could be announced by Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor, as soon as tomorrow.

The move is part of a package of reforms to wean Britain off furloughing as the Covid-19 lockdown is eased, with the Government desperate to get staff back to work.

Industry sources told the Telegraph that Cabinet ministers have begun telling bosses that the coronavirus job retention scheme will continue throughout the summer, with the taxpayer footing the bill for 60pc of wages.

Seen one expert say eventually most of us will get it irrespective of lockdowns, social distancing or anything else and after a year death rates will be similar in most countries.

Re: UPDATED DAILY : UK CORONAVIRUS - UPDATED 11/05/20

Mon May 11, 2020 1:32 pm

Section One: Eight key challenges in managing the virus identified
The first section of the document outlines the current situation - much of which we know already.

But in this chapter the Government says that it is only in a position to cautiously lift some elements of existing measures because it “cannot yet be confident that major adjustments now will not risk a second peak of infections that might overwhelm the NHS.”

This is one of the five tests which the Government revealed on April 16th as central to any effort to lift lockdown measures.

This section then goes on to outline eight challenges that lay ahead:

This is not a short-term crisis - and future waves can’t be excluded without continuing some measures.

In the near term, we cannot afford to make drastic changes - the document says that “we have little room for manoeuvre” if we want to keep the R below one.

There is no easy or quick solution - especially because it is not simple to develop vaccines and drugs

The country must get the number of new cases down - it says that only when there are fewer cases each day can we effectively contract trace

The world’s scientific understanding of the virus is still developing rapidly - there are many gaps in our understanding e.g. asymptomatic spread and the efficacy of shielding vulnerable groups.

The virus’ spread is difficult to detect - “this is why a significant part of the next phase of the Government’s response will be to improve its monitoring of and response to new infections.”

The Government must prepare for the challenges that the winter flu season will bring - the document says that this would make id difficult to trace and diagnose the virus, as symptoms are similar, and also increase demand for hospital beds

The plan depends on continued widespread compliance - the plan says that “very high continued levels of compliance are essential” to prevent the virus spreading uncontrolled.

Re: UPDATED DAILY : UK CORONAVIRUS - UPDATED 11/05/20

Mon May 11, 2020 1:33 pm

Step Two: Measures to be taken no sooner than June 1

The Government has earmarked the following adjustments to be made from June 1:

Schools should prepare to begin to open again for more children from June 1 - with Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 to all be back at school in smaller size groups from this point.

Secondary schools should “ prepare to begin some face to face contact’ with Year 10 and Year 12 pipils who have key exams next year, to support continued online learning.

Non-essential retail will be opened where it is safe to do so - this will take place in phases. But hospitality and personal care should not re-open at this stage “because the risk of transmission in these environments is higher”.

Cultural and sporting events will be able to take place behind closed doors for broadcast More local public transport will be opened in urban areas, subject to strict control measures

Re: UPDATED DAILY : UK CORONAVIRUS - UPDATED 11/05/20

Mon May 11, 2020 1:34 pm

Step Three: Measures to be taken no earlier than July 4

There are less specifics on the adjustments we can expect from July 4 - but the main thrust is focused on reopening the businesses that are still closed.

The document said that the “ambition at this step is to open at least some of the remaining businesses and premises that have been required to close”. This will include: Personal care (e.g. hairdressers and beauty salons) Hospitality (e.g. food service providers, pubs and accommodation) Public places (e.g. places of worship) and leisure facilities (e.g. cinemas).

They will be asked to meet the Covid-19 Secure guidelines - these will be announced later this week.

UK furlough scheme extended by four months

The UK scheme to pay wages of workers on leave because of coronavirus will be extended to October, Chancellor Rishi Sunak said.

He said the government backed workers and companies going into the lockdown, and would support them coming out.

Mr Sunak confirmed that employees will continue to receive 80% of their monthly wages up to £2,500.

But he said the government will ask companies to "start sharing" the cost of the scheme from August.

Mr Sunak rejected suggestions some people might get "addicted" to furlough if it was extended.

Some 7.5 million workers are now covered by the scheme, up from 6.3 million last week, he said.

The chancellor told the Commons that from August, the scheme would continue for all sectors and regions of the country but with greater flexibility to support the transition back to work, he said.

Employers currently using the scheme would be able to bring furloughed employees back part-time.

UK minister warns 'lavish' summer holidays aren't viable

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has warned British people are unlikely to be able to go on "lavish" foreign holidays this summer.

Asked whether "summer was cancelled" on ITV's This Morning, he said: "I think that's likely to be the case."

Hancock said: "We haven't made a final decision on that yet but it is clear we will seek to reopen hospitality, some hospitality, from early July if we keep successfully reducing the spread of this virus.

"But social distancing of some kind is going to continue.

"The conclusion from that is - it is unlikely that big, lavish international holidays are going to be possible for this summer. I just think that's a reality of life."

Under the current government guidelines people are still unable to go on holiday within the UK, although in England they are able to travel as far as they want for exercise from Wednesday if they don't stay overnight.

Uk Total death toll 32,692

Re: UPDATED DAILY : UK CORONAVIRUS - UPDATED 12/05/20

Tue May 12, 2020 4:06 pm

Further 627 deaths announced across the UK

The official coronavirus death toll in the UK has risen to 32,692 - up 627 on yesterday's figure.

But if "excess deaths" - all those which would not have occurred without the virus - are added, the number of people who have died as a result of the UK pandemic is more than 50,000.

As of 09:00 on Tuesday there have been 2,007,146 tests, with 85,293 tests on 11 May - below the 100,000 target set for the end of April.

Of those daily tests, 3,403 were positive.

A note on Tuesdays:

Due to a lag in reporting deaths around every weekend, Tuesday has seen the highest number of deaths reported in each of the last three weeks. Today's death toll of 627 is a decrease from 693 last Tuesday.
