Those figures are dropping massively due to our lockdown compliance and social distancing

At this point in the pandemic 2 weeks ago both Spain and Italy were well over 250 deaths a day, the fact we have less shows full lockdowns were not needed and the government seem to be right about this.

They deserve some credit now as numbers are consistently coming down

Only 4 deaths here in Wales yesterday, surely that’s very good news. Not sure how many there were in Italy and Spain yesterday but things are opening up there yet not here..... :o

The UK actually on the 29th February & 30th February 2020 said people must isolate in their homes for 14 days if returning from parts of China, then let the airports stay totally open and never guaranteed anyone through the airports till May 2020.

True coronavirus death toll rises past 44,000 in Britain - 10,000 more than the Department of Health's count - as devastating statistics show more than 11,000 how now died in care homes

A combination of the most recently available data puts death toll at 44,094

In comparison Italy, the next worst hit country in Europe, has recorded 32,007

At least 11,000 people - a quarter of total - died in England & Wales care homes

By SAM BLANCHARD SENIOR HEALTH REPORTER FOR MAILONLINE

PUBLISHED: 09:57 BST, 19 May 2020 | UPDATED: 10:35 BST, 19 May 2020

More than 44,000 people have now been killed by COVID-19 in the UK, devastating statistics confirmed today.

And more than 11,000 victims were care home residents in England and Wales.

The weekly Office for National Statistics data has lumped almost 10,000 extra fatalities on top of the Department of Health's official count of 34,796 yesterday.

The number of people dying with the virus each week continues to fall, the ONS's research shows, but the ongoing crisis in care homes means there are still more deaths than would be expected in an average year.

Britain's status as the worst-hit country in Europe is underlined by the figures, with Italy so far recording 32,000 deaths, by comparison.

ONS data, which covers England and Wales, confirmed 39,071 people had died with the coronavirus by May 8.

At least 1,211 further people were known to have died in English hospitals between May 9 and May 17, according to the NHS, taking the England & Wales total to 40,282.

In addition, National Records of Scotland - the equivalent of the ONS north of the border - counted 3,213 deaths by May 10, and Northern Ireland's Statistics Agency, NISRA, added 599 up to May 13.

This takes the total for the UK to at least 44,094.

Death total now stands at 1,852 in Wales

There have now been a total of 1,852 deaths in Wales involving coronavirus, according to the latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures.

The statistics cover the period up to 8 May, involving deaths registered up to 16 May.

In Wales, there were 211 registered deaths in the week ending 8 May involving Covid-19, accounting for 30.5% of all deaths registered.

This is a smaller weekly total than the previous week, which was 281.

There has now been a total of 507 deaths in care homes.

Cardiff has had the largest number of Covid-19 deaths in Wales so far - 303, followed by Rhondda Cynon Taff with 224 up to 8 May.

But RCT has the highest death rate - when different sizes of population are taken into account - 93.28 deaths per 100,000 people.

He finally got tested in the last couple of days.,It came back negative.

He may of had it though unless he's now had the serology test which is unlikely. They are making a bit of a balls up with the serology testing to be honest. Properly targeted sampling, a bit like they do for election predictions and they would have a pretty good idea of how many people of had it in each area and fairly quickly. It wouldn't give individual confidence but it would really help with the overall planning of the way out of this.

Will the UK get an extra bank holiday?

The government is considering the idea of an extra bank holiday in October, as suggested by the UK tourism industry body Visit Britain.

Its acting head, Patricia Yates, told MPs on Tuesday the industry had lost the benefit of two bank holidays in May because of the coronavirus lockdown.

She said an extra day in October, possibly around the time of half-term, would enable the UK tourism sector to extend the season.

Downing St said the government was supporting the tourism industry through this "challenging period" and would "respond in due course" to the proposal.

But the prime minister's spokesman said it was "worth acknowledging that extra bank holidays do come with economic costs".

Meeting loved ones outdoors in Wales 'being considered'

Wales' health minister is considering whether people should be able to meet loved ones who are not already in their household outdoors.

The next review of the Welsh Government's lockdown rules is due next week, on 28 May.

It comes as new advice said the virus is "very likely to decay very quickly" when exposed to sunlight.

Vaughan Gething said ministers were having a "very real debate".

PM calls for NHS surcharge to be scrapped for health workers and carers

The Prime Minister has asked the Department of Health to remove to NHS surcharge for NHS and care workers "as soon as possible".

Boris Johnson was a "personal beneficiary" of care from NHS workers from abroad, and the surcharge was something he was "thinking about a great deal", his spokesman said.

The surcharge of £400 a year for overseas care workers coming from outside the European Economic Area is paid regardless of use of healthcare services, and is set to rise to £624 a year in October.

A Downing Street spokesman said: "The PM has asked the Home Office and the Department for Health and Social Care to remove NHS and care workers from the NHS surcharge as soon as possible.

What's happening in the UK today?

It's the end of the working week for many and the start of a long weekend in the UK. So what's the picture looking like across the nation this afternoon?

The R number in the UK - showing the reproductive rate of the virus - has remained steady for the second week in a row

We've had more detail on plans to ask anyone arriving from abroad to self-isolate for 14 days - with the government saying those who fail to do so could risk a £1,000 fine

Government borrowing surged to £62bn in April - the highest monthly figure on record

You won’t find any good news on the news for sure....don’t even know how they can justify further lockdown here in Wales....I dread to think how long the dole q is going to be if they don’t get it going soon.....

14-day quarantine for most UK arrivals

Patel says new measures are to be introduced at the UK border to guard against a second wave of infections.

Anyone entering the UK, from 8 June, will have to self-isolate for 14 days.

The home secretary says there is a risk that people visiting the UK over the summer or returning from holidays abroad might bring the virus with them.

With the infection rate in the UK falling, imported cases could pose a "larger threat" going forward, she says, and action is needed to manage the risk of transmission this way.

As was speculated earlier, those arriving from the Republic of Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man will be exempt.

Others excluded are the medical professionals helping to treat the virus and seasonal agricultural workers staying on the farms where they are working.

We should be hearing from the UK government at its daily briefing in around 30 minutes, but let’s take a look at the latest from the country first.

A further 157 coronavirus deaths have been announced by the National Health Service in England. In Wales, six more deaths were announced with a further 16 in Scotland. UK-wide figures will come later

Downing Street defended PM Boris Johnson's chief aide, Dominic Cummings, after it was revealed he travelled 250 miles from London to County Durham at the height of the UK's lockdown

Mr Cummings told reporters he behaved "reasonably and legally". No 10 said the trip was made to secure childcare for his young son as the advisor and his wife feared they were unwell with the virus

France said it would replicate the UK's new quarantine for international travellers to cover arrivals from the UK from 8 June

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters says he is "as confident as we can be" matches will resume in June, telling the BBC "we've taken the first step"

Downing Street press conference delayed

Today’s Downing Street press conference will be held at 5pm, instead of the usual time of 4pm.

It is not yet clear who will be leading today’s briefing. Several MPs including the Shadow Home Secretary Nick Thomas-Symonds, have called for the PM to chair today’s conference, in light of the growing criticism of his chief advisor.
