Why don't we invest in this essential area?

I've no issue with overseas recruitment but with many unemployed here, why don't we concentrate on filling the gaps?

Not enough people want to do the degree nessasary to be a qualified nurse plus when do qualify they go off to private sector/agencies
or abroad after a years experience! Also cut backs mean often or not when someone leaves a post they're not replaced and this applies to all levels of staff drs physio nurses ...

or abroad after a years experience! Also cut backs mean often or not when someone leaves a post they're not replaced and this applies to all levels of staff drs physio nurses ...

Degrees for nurses are a stupid waste of time. It is an ego thing.
Being able to write an essay is not going top make you a caring person.
Why do you need a degree to make a bed, hand out paracetamol, or change a drip?
These tasks can be learnt "on the job" in a short period of time under guidance from a more experienced person.

The vast majority of nurses have no decision making, responsibility, accountability roles anyway
They just carry out the decisions and orders that doctors make. A nurse can only issue medicine that a doctor has prescribed, they can only alter a drip if the doctor gives them permission to do so.

Why does a theatre nurse need a degree to just hand instruments to a surgeon? He/she has no input into an operation other than as a goffer for the surgeon. A day or 2 spent learning instruments names (Scalpel, forceps, needle etc) would suffice.

Ever heard of nurse prescribers? Also it is the nurses who correct the doctors when they make mistakes in the prescribing process. Nurses need the knowledge of medications with Indications, dosing and reactions as well as knowing when to withhold given drugs. The nurse isn't the yes person to the doctor's, they are there as the voice to the patient and ultimately it is the nurse who makes the decision upon recommendation of the doctors and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.

I agree to some extent that the nursing degree isn't up to standard in regards to delivering holistic care and more focussed on evidence based practice but the rest of your comments are a bit insulting to the many brilliant nurses I work with who are extremely intelligent and very highly skilled.

What degree did was to shift from patient care to academic status not sure about now but in my years in nhs main complaint was that qualified staff did not want to or couldn't do basic nursing care as degree is focused on documentation and procedures ! You go on ward and ask how mrs jones is doing and you'll get common response I dont know she is not my patient!! The culprit in all this is the Americans as lots of nursing work is based on their ways of doing things that simply dont work in our system.

there will be no money left mate..
god knows how many temporary hospitals they have wasted money on and in some cases are not yet complete....and rumour has it in one case { awaiting announcement } is not fit for use. and to be dismantled and possibly be re fitted

Degrees are just a business model these days . No justification in many professions not just the NHS just a money making scam
